This is a serious question. I was involved in a group break of a Jumbo case of 2012 Topps Update last night. On every box it clearly states "1 auto and 2 relics" per box. Two boxes had no autos. One box had three autos. With busting a whole case, we weren't shorted. But had someone bought one of those two boxes by itself, they would have been shorted the GUARANTEED auto. Now, I know this can be remedied by sending the box/wrapper into Topps and requesting the shorted auto, but it's an unnecessary punishment and burden to make the collector jump through hoops to get what they are entitled to.

And this is not an isolated incident. I've seen time and time again where boxes were shorted the guaranteed # of hits.

So, seriously, how hard it is to make sure that what it says is guaranteed in the box is actually in the box?

Guess it depends on the scope of what's being produced; its probably a lot harder to make sure guaranteed hits are in a thousand boxes as opposed to tens of thousands of boxes.

But the guarantee says they'll provide you with any missing hits... should there be any.

He has a point though.

Ziplock produces 100s of 1,000s of boxes of storage bags every day, and if the box says there are 50 in it,
you can bet your ass there are 50 bags in that box.

When you buy a pack of Marlboros, there are 20 of them in there.

How about if you went to buy an iphone and the box had the charger, manual, battery, etc...but no phone?

Why is it so DAMN hard for topps to get this right? It's what they DO...period.

Ziploc has a much simpler product.

I think Chris Farley in Tommy Boy said it best:

Tommy: Let's think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I'm listening.
Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of XXXX. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
Ted Nelson, Customer: [pause] Okay, I'll buy from you.
Tommy: Well, that's...
Tommy, Richard Hayden: ...What?

=

You can thank the people who felt entitled to free hits and would abuse the system. Used to be you would call and they would take care of you. Then they required you to jump through hoops because people would call when they didn't get the "value" they felt entitled to and would lie about not getting hits.

And a much larger/more diverse product line...yet they seem somehow to get it all right...hmm

All bags in the box are the same size.

The Ziplock comparison would work if we were talking about total number of cards in a box

Which also happens all the time.

It still doesn't excuse the fact that they MAKE THEIR LIVING by producing trading cards.

They should have the process damn near 100% right, and they're not even close.

This is yet another topic that has been around since... the beginning of cards.

The process would be a lot easier if there weren't dozens of different sub-sets and hundreds of different base cards being distributed at a time.

As long as the manufacturer does what it says its going to do it doesn't really matter because that's what is agreed upon if you purchase.

I challenge you to open a 50-bag box of Ziplocs and count them all up. I'm guessing you'll find yourself 1 or 2 bags short every once in a while, and 1 or 2 bags over once in a while. Same with 100ct penny sleeve bags.

It bugs me too but when you consider that the printing and packaging process has to be fragile enough to not damage the product (since condition is so important in this hobby nowadays) and when you think about how thin the average card is, I could see how some cards might accidentally get skipped in the process. I just wish I knew you could contact the company and have one sent to you in the event you were shorted a hit. I've come up short quite a few times in the past but I remember the packs said in writing that the hit ratios were estimates and the company made no guarantee that the box would yield said number of hits. So I never bothered to contact them. :(
