I have a couple of collections I really focus on and handle them completely different. 1) I player collect ARod and I know I will never get the money back that I put into it but it's been a lot of fun putting the collection together. Despite his place in the minds of many, I still pick up cards I still need for my collection simply because I collect his cards not invest. 2) My personal collection consist of HOF PSA RCs. That collection is catalogued on VCP with my exact buy price and current market value. I use the entire site as a resourceful tool for purchasing and selling. I will eventually sell everything or pass my account information on to my wife or kids and let them make a real educated decision on what to do with the cards. Theoretically, collection #2 has the same probability of returning a significant positive or negative investment just like my 401k account but the difference is I know a lot more about Topps baseball cards than I do about dividends, hedge funds or yields.
