As a Royals fan, I'm about to throw up. And because I really hate Dayton Moore, I really hope Wil Myers becomes the next Mike Trout. I just can't see giving up 6-7 cost controlled years of Myers for 2 years of James Shields. Not to mention giving up Odorizzi -- that's just freakin stupid. And way to sell low on Montgomery.
Odorizzi is not a #2 in a 1st division rotation and Monty will be lucky to be a bullpen arm. And Monty isn't even close to MLB time, well at least quality MLB time.Personally, Tampa came away with a haul! A potential all-star outfielder and a number two and number four pitcher at their peak who are both near ready for full-time MLB duty. Wow.
Dude, Shields is a horse and can go toe-to-toe with basically any pitcher in the game and give your team a legit shot to win. Davis is underrated, IMO. I think KC got what they needed and wanted, so you have to give something up for that, obviously. The Rays are taking the gamble more than KC.
I'm not saying that Shields isn't good. I don't agree that the Rays are taking more of a risk. Shields would be gone in 2 years and even though his contract is reasonable compared to the rest of baseball it's still at the upper limits of what the Rays can pay. Taking his money off the books and getting top flight prospects back will help the Rays long term far more than the 2 years he puts in for the Royals. Davis isn't anybody I'm excited about but at least he has a decent contract. If this trade was just Myers for Shields I wouldn't really like it but it wouldn't have overly pissed me off. But Myers AND Odorizzi for Shields is too much (I'd much rather have Odorizzi than Davis). And then throwing in Montgomery is a Royals like thing to do. Maybe he will never regain his form but if he can, he will really help make this one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history.
KC is in the business of running their ball club. they dont give a XXXX about what "might be". this isnt baseball card XXXX ya know lol
Big words right there! In all MLB history? C'mon now. This is a very balanced trade. I wish the Red Sox would have offered Brentz or Bogaerts for Shields. I wouldn't complain for one second if either of those had gone through.
If I was a Red Sox fan, trading the prospects wouldn't bother me either. But the Royals, with their limited budget, need the 6 to 7 cost controlled years of Myers far more than 2 years of Shields. If the Royals were just a pitcher away from contending, it might be worthwhile but they need a whole lot more than Shields. If everything breaks right for the Royals in 2013 they may end up with 83-85 wins. Maybe once in 10 years will 85 wins get you in the playoffs. Mortgaging the future to win an extra 5-10 games when you still have almost no chance of making the playoffs makes no sense.
edited to add -- Myers is rated way above Brentz or Bogaerts not to mention they had to give up way more than just Myers to get 2 years of Shields.
My money is on Shields being traded during the season and they will get a haul of prospects for him in return.
Hard to explain them giving up Myers but they have to think they have a chance to compete in the AL Central next year. Just better hope Hosmer and the rest of the offense gets back on track.

That's basically not even what the Royals did. They gave up the #4 Prospect - according to MLB.com (Myers) and the #30 prospect (Odorizzi) for Shields and Davis (who isn't exactly a world beater) plus threw in a former top 20 prospect who had fallen on hard times but is still young enough to get his act together (Montgomery). (Brentz is #70 on that list, Bogaerts is #31)
