Showoff a BEAUTIFUL card and a question

This looked awesome on ebay, and I just recieved it today...it is so much nicer in person!

The question is, I see some people are able to scan cards so that it shows the refractions...What's the trick?

I would love to be able to scan this card that shows the refractions, but have tried a few things on my scanner without luck?

In this case it looks like they shined a light on just part of the card, and held it at an angle....maybe that is the only way to show the "rainbow" light refractions....which means it would have to be done with a camera too, and not a scanner...bummer...i was hoping someone may have experimented with scanning refractors before and had a tip.

This one was definitely taken with a digital camera as opposed to a scanner. The extra rainbow shine is from the flash.

You might try propping the card up a little on one side and then scan it. Never tried it, just a thought.

Getting a good shine on the Canoscan is probably impossible. I have tried several different methods. Now if you mess around with "gradient fill" option you can actually add a refractor effect after the fact.

The Zimmerman is a regular refractor and the Moss is an Atomic Refractor, different cards and refractorization. You can't get the Zimm to look like the Moss, the regular refractors don't have that chunky kaliedescopic effect to them. The Zimm is a nice card and that's probably as good of a scan as you're going to get out of that one.

I understand that they are different types of refractors, but nonetheless, you can see all the colors of the rainbow on the zimmerman too...just hoping a way to make those colors show in the scan somehow. I guess the only way is with a camera...oh well...

To the individual that asked, it is a HP all in one L7580. The only way I am able to achieve those scan results though are through the browser interface...seems like when I use the program the results are quite inferior. If you decide to buy one, let me know and I will walk you through it.

Obviously in scanners, the card doesn't move and neither does the light source. This means you will only get one constant exposure of the card. If you take a picture with a camera, the flash can reflect at different angles and there's other sources of light reflecting off the card's surface. This will lead to you being able to see multiple colors.

The trick with the camera is to get the correct angle to get the rainbow while avoiding glare and still getting a nice, crisp, clear shot. Once you get the best angle down it might be a good idea to set up a tripod and a semi-permanent spot to save time in the future. With the right camera set-up you can probably take better pictures and group shots than a scanner.

One of the best scans I had was years ago on an older scanner and a 1999 SP Authentic Epic Figures Ripken that came out a stunning bright orange.

Just wanted to say that, with my HP All-In-One, the light bar moves as the card is scanned. The light moves -- it just stays in sync with the angle of the scan.

I bought a new scanner, and this is how it scans refractors. I actually prefer your scan to mine, and I'd like to figure out how to change my settings to get scans more like yours!

Have you guys tried scanning vertically and horizontally? I know sometimes when I don't like the way a refractor scanned, I flip the card the other way and it comes out different. Just a thought...
