I'm not too interested in this card given the grade, but I wanted to see what was up with it.

Here's the messages I've exchanged with the seller.

Me: What exactly caused this card to get a 5 on surface?
Seller: I have no idea. I looks perfect to me.
Me: Perfect? It's a 5 centering grade.
Seller: Centering grade is 10.
Me: I'm asking about the surface grade. I've never seen a modern card get graded or a subgrade less than 7. What happened to the card's surface?
Seller: Like I have said, Nothing is wrong with the surface. I Know know how they grade it but I can not see any things wrong with the surface.

Is this guy just stupid?

Is this some sort of a joke? The only one looking odd here is you. You asked a question, and he gave you an answer. And least we forget, you were the one to ask about centering while you were refering to surface. He said he can see no flaw(s) on the surface. What more do you want/need? It's a 5 on the surface, period.

Honestly, If I were you, I'd just move along.

I am curious though, how on earth are you going to call the guy stupid? Do you, for some reason unknown to me, know he is lying about the surface and deliberately not telling you??

By the way, after looking at the card in question, I believe I can see why it got a 6 on the surface..

Didn't notice my typo. Guess it makes a little more sense now. I can't see an obvious surface defect for the life of me. Care to point it out?

It could be the scan, but I'd be willing to bet that the red foil is starting to flake off just above the P in Pujols on the front. (just above the P, there are some sizable spots where it looks like the red foil has already come off.)

Now, could this be the entire extent of the surface damage? I do not know, and for that matter, I'm not sure if that would warrent a 5 for a surface grade. However, if that were the extent of the damage, it's not that much of an eye sore but certinly visable.

No, just because he owns a graded card doesn't make him an expert....and neither does sending in cards for grading. Heck, even 95% of the grading "experts" here and on the BMB can barely fill out the grading form let alone apply the grading criteria spelled out on the BGS site....and 99% of the people grading cards don't even realize the criteria is spelled out on the BGS site.

As for the card in question, it either has some flaking as noted earlier or a very minor surface wrinkle. It is very common for people to miss a surface wrinkle on a card and be disappointed with a sure fire 8 or 9 that comes back a 5 (PSA automatically caps cards with surface wrinkles at a 5)....or 6.
