and I go to leave feedback for a seller (always give 5 stars unless there is a major issue).

and I see this.

Evidently since they used paypal/ebay shipping, Ebay knows when it was shipped and delivered and automatically give them 5 stars.

When I hover over "Why can't I enter this rating?" it says "Meeting or exceeding our shipping requirements automatically gives the seller a 5 star rating".

That will help with those people not happy with that feedback DSR.

I saw that the other day, and while i'm happy to see that some action is being taken for it, I do think it can cause a few issues;

1). that sellers will now just up their handling time to cover more time (as noted in this case),
2). that sellers still don't have any control over the USPS, and there still can be delays on their end that will cause items not to be delivered within the specified timeframe
3). buyers unhappy with delivery times will take their anger out on the other stars

If they could tie it to the date that the label is printed, it would be better, since post offices aren't supposed to accept mail from previous days.

I love sellers who mark the item as shipped and the postmark is actually for some 2 weeks later. I also love sellers who print PayPal shipping and sit on the package for 2 weeks. This policy only rewards sellers who use PP shipping, not sellers who ship in a timely fashion.

I normally give 5 stars for everything, even for 3 week shipping, if the seller is honest. In the past however, when I received a PayPal tracking number and DC showed the item scanned as accepted or processing through the seller's local PO a week or more later, I'd be sure to ding the stars. I did this not because I care about shipping time, but because I don't like being lied to.

It's all a ridiculous joke anyway.

I have shipped out of PP all the time and I have done by the next day payment has received. And then I have tracked the item and even though I know it is on it way. The tracking may show that the post office is still waiting to accept the package. But then when it is delivered I sometimes see that like 2 days later then I shipped it, there shows a accept scan, so not all shippers print and sit on a package. This would make no sense since they can just put it in their mail box and have carrier pick it up, like I do all the time, unless I'm going near the post office I take it there.

I think this is a start but the stars need to be done with all together. Five stars versus four stars versus three stars becomes ambiguous among different buyers but in the end might damage a sellers ability to sell.

I'd like to see a buyer-centered feedback system that simply asks "satisfied" or "unsatisfied." Seller feedback pages would show total items sold in a certain time period, say 100 in the current month, and then break down the ratings: 98 satisfied with shipping time, 2 unsatisfied with shipping time. Etc. This eliminates the need for judgment calls or automatic ratings.

I print all labels at home and never drop my packages in the mailbox. I refuse to send a package through USPS without having it scanned as accepted. I realize there is lag time, even failure to scan on the PO's behalf, but the frequency with which I receive shipment notice, only to have the package scanned at the seller's local PO a week or more later is alarming. I use good judgment in my assessment of the situation, but, I'm sorry, printing a shipping label does not mean the item has truly shipped.

I've even had sellers print PayPal shipping, and after two weeks the online status still reads "electronic shipping notice received." All of this, only to email the seller about the item's status and the next day have tracking updated to passing through the seller's local sorting facility.

Many sellers take their items to the PO after printing their own labels, as it is seemingly more secure means of insuring your package arrives in the hands of the USPS.

I personally like the automatic 5 star system when it comes to shipping time. I go to my local post office the day I receive payment and mail the card at the APC. I then come home and enter the USPS del conf number into ebay's system and I am done. The nice thing is that when those ebay buyers who leave feedback without using the star system, it doesn't matter as I automatically get the 5 star rating in that category. If I would use free shipping, I would automatically get 2 5 star ratings giving me a better chance to keep my 20% final value fee discount.
