So is Beckett that desperate for business?

I don't mean to be a d!ckhole, but what's shady about calling people that provided their info? If you're not interested, just tell 'em and then keep on keepin' on...

I never said it was shady (or maybe this comment wasn't directed at me, if it wasn't, I'm sorry).

To me, it just seems there is still a ton of grading going on at Beckett and to personally call random accounts and ask if they want their cards to be graded screams desperation. I just felt it was desperate and I didn't think Beckett was in a position to be in that mode. I've had that account for 7 years now and this is the first phone call I've gotten. Which is really weird b/c I haven't touched my Beckett account in several years and I'm sure the current number I have now is different than what's on my account....hmmmm...now that makes me think.

So you've never gotten a call from a company that you had given your information to? If not then you're the only person on the planet that hasn't. There's nothing desperate about it. They call old Beckett/BGS accounts and offer them special pricing to send an order. A lot of people here have taken advantage of the offer and will tell you it is actually a great deal. This seams like a desperate attempt to have yet another of your threads on page 1.

Wowza. You realize 75% of this thread was fueled by overweight men commenting on other overweight men that I had nothing to do with right? I haven't been the one bumping in a "desperate attempt to keep in page 1."

Anyway, to put it politely without giving you the same snarky tone you gave me, I've given a lot of my information to a lot of companies - and Beckett is the last company in a very long time that I can remember calling my cell phone at random to pitch me their product.

Look, the whole reason I started the thread is because I thought Beckett was so financially comfortable that this wasn't necessary. I would have had the same reaction if Ebay or Walmart called me to pitch their product (I obviously know Ebay and Walmart have way more money than Beckett) but it still applies. With 99% of advertising being done within the media or online, it just seemed weird to me to get a random phone call. Couple that with the fact that I was under the impression Beckett gets so much business through their grading services, I was even more confused by the phone call.

So, I took it as a sign of desperation.

Purely a guess but I wonder if they have a slowdown in business during the summer and they are just trying to drum some up.

You could very well be right. However, I'm frankly surprised this is the first time you've heard from them. I look at it as "what took them so long?" If they're just now starting a phone campaign, I'm wondering how much money they've left on the table by not doing this for the past several years. It's quite possible that for every collector they annoy, they might reach two or three others that take them up on it. All they're investing is a quick follow up call. Since you weren't going to use their service in the first place, there's nothing lost except a little time on both your parts. From their standpoint, though... nothing ventured, nothing gained. I know from personal experience with my clients that I'm much more likely to get repeat business if I make a follow up phone call or a personal visit from time to time. Their life (and yours) revolves around a lot of things, and my product (and graded cards for you) are probably not on the top of their everyday list. As a company, I can't afford to hope a client calls me - I've got to reach out to them. I don't see it as being any different from Beckett's point of view.

I do read the board and I know what people say about Beckett. Heck, I've probably said most of the same things about the magazine.

However, I didn't take the job as the football and hockey editor to continue doing the same old stuff. I have more than a decade of journalism experience under my belt and I plan on using that in my work with Beckett. I am limited on what I can and cannot do based on the number of editorial pages in the magazine, but I am going to do the best job I can.

I don't mind the negative comments. Honestly, it just fuels me to do better and create a magazine that more people are going to respect. I already know I can't make everyone happy. So I am not going to try.

However, if you ever have comments or questions for me, you know how to get in touch.

I lurk. :)

9 bucks for one month of pricing for one sport...now that's a deal they don't have to cold call people on!

I enjoyed your opening article about being a female in the hobby and the same stupid questions people ask you. The ignorance must get old quick.

It's always fun when I go into a hobby shop and the owner always talks to my boyfriend about cards before me. It lets wander off and find what I want anyway.

Not aimed at you in particular, and no bad intent. I don't remember what the words used were, but it seemed like several people mentioned it was shady, or slimy, sketchy, or something like that. I didn't go back and reread so maybe I misread. If I owned a business and had people's numbers, I'd prob use them!

I've received calls from Ebay before and Wal-Mart sends me an ads I never asked for every week in the mail......
