Help as in giving me some advice!

I haven't said much as I've been really busy with work, fire department, and assisting neighbors, but I lost my entire collection thanks to Hurricane Irene. I didn't really talk about it because I was somewhat in shock but moreso, I just wanted to help the community recover and I haven't really had alot of time for cards. But, now that the playoffs are getting ready to start and things are starting to regulate a little, I want to get back into it.

But I have NO clue where to start.......what do you guys think? Where should I go with my new collection?

thats crazy. i would be pissed if i were you, probably would have stopped collecting a while ago as i could not take losing a collection like 5 times. either way, id start a player collection if i were you, as thats what has always been my favorite part of the hobby.

Brother, words cannot express the sorrow i feel for what has happened to your cardboard.
That being said, you are a strong man for starting over (yet again).

if i had to start over again, i would without a doubt collect one (MAYBE two) player(s).
someone that i grew up being a fan of, someone with plenty of cards out there, that
there will always be something to add at all sorts of price points.

On a serious note, sorry about losing the collection once again and good luck rebuilding. Don't know what direction to take it, but I hope you find something that is enjoyable, and it is a collection that remains with you a long time.

Collect Scott Proctor. That way you won't be sad when your collection gets destroyed next time.

I was going to say build late 80s, early 90s complete sets. ;)

Seriously though, I am just getting back into collecting after a hiatus and having my sister dispose of most of the cards I had. Not on the same level, but that's where I'm coming from. E actually helped me quite a bit and I'm going to focus on a player collection of a Twin whom I had the chance to meet and see as a great player and a great person. I'm going to bust wax every now and then just for the hell of it and because I enjoy it, but my focus is going to be on my player collection.

I hear ya. You guys cheer me up. Its been kinda hard. I didn't have a clue what had happened until after I got off from the FD that Sunday night and I got a picture sent to me of the damage from the storm. It was crazy. Either a downdraft/gust/tornado, and then flood waters got the rest.

Pick a vintage set.....1960 Topps, 1957 Topps, 1971, 1973 ect.....whatever you think looks great. Your favorite set from years past.

Collect it in PSA in whatever grade you think is doable.

It's fun, there is always something to search for, and it'll give you years to complete. Chase cards, HOF'ers, tough SP's.......And when (or if) you do, do it again with another year 8-)

You could go with only graded cards? They're much more resistant to water damage.

I've seen you mention this a couple times, and each time I haven't really been able to respond. What happened completely sucks and I'm sure I don't have the right words. Personally, I don't know if my collecting could recover from something like that. I won't try to tell you where to start now, but when you do, let us know. I'm sure there are many here that would help you begin again.

Very sorry to hear of your loss(es).

Lots of people have been saying this in different ways, but...if I had to start over again, the key for me would be focus.

For me, it may be something like a higher quality 1967 Red Sox set - the Impossible Dream year. Something achievable, but still substantial.

From there, I would go player as many have said. I (relatively) recently started a player collection, and I really find it liberating. I can easily pass on cards that I would have chased before and feel good about a pick up that has meaning to me, but not many others chased to drive up the price.

As you can see, my team is the Red Sox, but all the same model applies to all teams and players.

Good luck.

You like the Yankees and Nationals, right? Pick a young guy that doesn't have many cards from one of those teams - Brett Gardner, Jesus Montero, Jordan Zimmerman, Mike Morse....

Someone you really enjoy watching play and start a player collection. That way you get to collect everything early on, do not have to do much card hunting from previous years, and watch them grow as MLB players.
