I have been picking up more and more cards (with holiday cash, and saved up capital from work :)), and I figured I would start my own universal thread for pickups and hobby observations. I won't be posting all of my pickups here, just the interesting ones.

$11.70 DLVD

-Wow has this guy fallen (or maybe I got a decent deal?). Big time power potential, relatively young (22 all of last year), solid athletic frame (6'4, 195)...the only thing keeping him from being a really top-flight prospect is his batting eye. With time and polish, I could see this guy becoming a top 50 prospect. Sleeper alert!

$12.55 DLVD

-Really not all that bad; I wanted to pick one of these up just to see what kind of quality these cards have in person. Jack was a classic, and I am extremely happy to pick this card up at the price I did.

$41 DLVD

-Probably overpaid, but I am a HUGE believer in Chacin. Great looking card as well.

I am still trying to secure a case of contenders, although it appears that Blowout is sold out :(

Derrek Lee UD Ultimate Gold Road JSY auto /5- $24 dlvd

Is it just me, or is that crazy cheap?

Not sure why, but $25 sounds about right.

I just figured that he was a legitimate super star on a popular franchise....why wouldn't that be a $40-50 card? I bought it for my PC regardless :)

I don't think Lee gets all that much hobby love and in my book he's no real superstar (outside of his huge 2005 season he has never had 100 RBI, scored 100 runs or hit more than 32 homers in a season.) That said, I think that that set (and even more so the bat auto's are extremely underpriced. The hobby has seen very few auto'd bat barrels and jumbo patches, and this set IMO should be going for way more, and will likely see increases especially on the bigger names (I've recently picked up a Jeter bat/auto and a Sandberg bat/auto, both as investments.)

Eh, I suppose I overrate him a bit because I feel that he is the only real underrated player on the Cubs EXTREMELY overrated lineup (check out his home road splits compared to the rest of his Cub teammates). If he can get to 400-450 HR, with a 130 OPS+ and a few more GG, I think he could be a HOFer. One can wish at least :)

Beautiful cards!

Can you explain to me why you like Hunter? When A's drafted him, I was going to target him but his stats in college wasn't that great and he is injury prone (if my memory serves me right).

Is it his stuff?

Thanks!

Thanks for the compliments. Brett Hunter is my favorite kind of prospect...relatively little risk (in terms of price) with potential for a high reward (in terms of overall ceiling). I think Hunter is a little overshadowed by the pitcher rich (may be a understatement) system he has around him. I love his stuff, and if he can stay healthy, I like him to break out....sooner rather than later.

WOOOO

$79 dlvd ($12 for shipping....ick)

This card is a huge boost to my Elite auto set...I have been questioning whether this card exists or not (Donruss wouldn't even give me a straight answer). This is the first one to hit ebay which is pretty weird for a card /99.

Ive been buying a lot lately, here is a sample:

227362211_tp.jpg

-($5 BIN) Pretty freakin cheap considering the tools he has.

d213_1.jpg

-($17 BIN) SPd to 87...I have been thinking about doing the RC auto contenders set this year so I figured I might as well pick this one up.

Sleeper Alert!

ffc0_1.jpg

-($3.70) With the revelation that his Contenders auto is extremely limited, and the realization that his Elite print runs are also very low, his prime cuts card is the easiest to get...AND REALLY AFFORDABLE.

Not sure how Friedrich can be considered a "great prospect"...not even top 100.

Keith Law has him listed as the #2 prospect in Colorado's system, ahead of Chacin who is in the top 50 of nearly everyone's top 100. He has a four pitch mix, and has potential to have 3 plus pitches going in to the future....which is huge, especially for a big lefty. I think he has a solid, #2 or maybe even #1 starter ceiling, which makes his pricing all the more confusing.
