you dont collect him, or else you wouldnt have sold the first one. so sell the second one. you might miss having the golds, but you're gonna be more than happy with your cash in hand.

I don't agree with that statement.

Why not wait to sell them once he wins the Cy Young, or better yet makes it to the playoffs?

I do, or at least he prefers green more than the cardboard; its easier to sell down the line if you're starting to sell now. But its his stuff!

There's no guarantee the cards could be had for cheaper during the off-season, a third party could make sure the ebay floor is $1800/$2K (or whatever).

I agree as well. I could never move my Hanley Gold even if it reach 2k and was going to be a $1200 profit. Maybe I could move 1 if I had 2, but getting rid of both would be hard.

First, I'm surprised to see Kenny parting with his man-crush. However, every card has it's price....every card. Good luck tracking down a red refractor.

One final thought....this is not directed at Kenny but the board in general. I'm a little older than most and have a fair amount of disposal income. It still seems rather foolish to me to be spending $2k to $5k on a modern baseball card.

The hobby is shrinking and I don't think the cards of this era will have the same impact on the hobby in the future as vintage cards do on the hobby today. In the old days, cards were collected, traded and abused. Today, we slap a card in a top loader or PSA/BGS slab. Fifty years from now, there will be countless copies of gem mint cards in existence from this era.

A significant amount of money is thrown at prospects by our membership. I wonder how many people are carrying sports card related debt? Looking back at the down turn in the economy, I wonder how many members wish the had money in the bank rather than a stack of cardboard?

Again, I am not passing judgment on anyone....just thinking out loud.

you are a collector of him right. so if you think you can a gold back for less in the offseason then sell. if you dont think you can buy it back then hold.

They won't - or at least 99.99% of them won't -for the reasons you cite. Far fewer people do not/will not enjoy cards as much (but I do) and condition is pretty much meaningless. Fewer people collect many more brands.

Just another reason for prospectors to flip as quickly as possible.

Good points, and I agree cards will be worth less in the future for the reasons you are saying. However, I'd apply your logic to vintage as well. I agree that condition on modern cards doesn't matter because people take care of them now so you don't have the damage caused scarcity that vintage has. However, even without the created scarcity, a card with a PR of 50 is already rare. While you're right that people will care less about cards in the future it would make sense to me that the people spending big money on cards in the future will be the current generation of 20-30 year olds that grow up to have disposable income. While vintage will still have it's place, I think this generation knows less about the history of the game and will be more interested in enjoying the top cards of the players they watched growing up.

It depends. Tim Lincecum is in his second year in the majors, so I agree $2K is ridiculous in the long run. However, the card in my sig is considered a modern card, and I don't see it ever going down in value (best autograph set, deceased HOFer, print run of under 40), so it's not entirely fair to say no modern cards will hold any value.

And to the OP...don't you drive a BMW? I don't think you're going to starve.

Sell all Lincecum. I don't see how he could have much upward potential. He will spike with a CY, but after that it is all downhill.

I never said - "no modern cards will hold their value..."

I said - "The hobby is shrinking and I don't think the cards of this era will have the same impact on the hobby in the future as vintage cards do on the hobby today."

There is a big difference. I think some of the cards with autographs of deceased HOF caliber players (from the 1950's and earlier) will be valuable down the road since the supply is limited. However, in general the modern players will have enough autographed cards to satisfy the market demands.

If Lincy (or any star) is in the league over the next 15 years....he could have an endless supply of autographed cards, not to mention the number of signings he does in his 40 plus years after retiring from the game.

Oh i collect him, its just a matter of selling it and risk buying it back cheaper in the off season or whenever. his prices are at its peak right now and has never been this high before (not even at release  )

I think you answered your own question with the above statement. I know you collect him but if you can make some cash and buy back in the offseason go for it.
