I didn't even notice that they resembled monkeys. I thought they were the usual "blackface" cartoon characters.

Either way, it's pretty horrible to look back and see so much disdain for people.

I give that card 4 strikes:

1) Stereotype of blacks eating watermelon
2) Stereotype of blacks having simion-like features (monkey-like portrayal)
3) Stereotype of a black sneaking up on a watermelon - indicating their stereotype of being shifty, theives and untrustworthy
4) Anachronism of the players wearing gloves (players in 1880's didn't wear gloves)

Fleetwood Walker, by the way, was the player Cap Anson had the run in with that is generally citied as one of the main contributors to the color line being drawn. More about that here if you are interested, from my Anson website:

grace: I actually am under the impression that he was running after the watermelon (which is just as worse). I have many African American friends, and you'd be amazed at how people let so few represent so many (as far as the thug stereotypes go).
It's almost like saying every southerner is a redneck or that every white person with a shaved head is a Neo ****.

Nice catch on the glove thing, though. That's actually funny.

There were lots of images in the early part of the century of blacks stealing watermelons out of farmer's watermelon patches. I think the artist was harkening back to those images. Take a look at the images from the 1905 film short "The Watermelon Patch" on this page. Unbelievable by today's standards.

Not to get off track but how many of your friends are actually from Africa, as in they immigrated to America and are now citizens of America?

I have 2 friends that were born in Africa then moved here but they moved here at a VERY young age.

My point was that most black people aren't from Africa yet people feel the need to call them African American. If they were born in the States, they are American.

But he was making a point about having friends of color. And saying "I have many American friends" wouldn't make that point.

Currently reading a book about Jackie Robinson's 1947 season and sportswriters had the same problem. They didn't want to appear racist by writing certain words, but what they ended up with didn't quite work either. Phrases like "dusky Jackie Robinson" just didn't seem much better. Almost any phrase a white writer uses to convey a difference in skin tone can be used against him. And acceptability changes over time in the culture. "African-American" was considered an acceptable phrase until recently. Still is by many. But others now find it offensive. It's just difficult to discuss race without offending someone. It would be nice if there wasn't any need to, but it is a physically defining characteristic that sometimes needs to be discussed, so both sides need to show a little leeway to the other. I'm sure A_Pharis meant no slight to American born blacks. And by using blacks, I've probably just offended someone else.

the back is sad and hard to believe what we once were as a country

Where we once were? A lot of racial issues still exist, it'll never go away.

Yes, "where we once were."..

If you do not think we have come leaps and bounds over the last 50+ years, then you just do not know enough to comment on this topic. Sure, there is still a lot of work to be done, and a lot of racisim still brews in our culture, but to deny the progress of the past is to deny hope for the future.

You do realise that african americans(among other nationalities) were once asked to use different restrooms and drinking fountains? Not allowed at local swimming pools or in public resturants? Not allowed to schools across the country??? The list of astonshing acts of ignorance goes on and on and on...

You really think we have learned nothing and have not moved forth as a concious at all??

No joke, when I was in high school one school here in NC still had separate locker rooms with "whites and negros" painted on the doors. This was in 1997 too. No one actually used them that way, but they still hadn't been painted over. Also, I can remember every water fountain area in both my elementary and middle schools had two. One really nice one, and one that was terrible. They didn't have signs on them anymore, but you could see the indentation in the paint for the sign where years of painting didn't layer where the signs once were.

Your entire post is absolutely ignorant, you took my four word opinion and turned me into someone that has never studied US History. Thank you.

Just a little background: Born and raised in Columbia, SC. What can you assume from that?

Well-- it means sadly Bruce is from a state that has no professional sports teams and he may be forgiven for bitterness towards his fellow man

Also means I now have a buddy I can stay with when I go to South Carolina to golf next year ( please make sure to stock the pantry buddy I eat a lot) :o

Sorry did we get off topic with the card discussion which was racist / discriminatory on about 10 levels??

Jeff

I know, I've got to drive an hour north for football and 3 hours west for baseball.

False. Confusing progress within the laws of government with progress as a society is a fallacy.

False. Confusing progress within the laws of government with progress as a society is a fallacy.

Is it not society, in a democratic country, that elects the lawmakers and voices their support for new laws that pass? America has made great strides as a society. Our laws reflect those strides. My father was a racist. And even though I grew up with his jabs at minorities, his prejudices haven't lived on in me. Societal influences were stronger than his example. Race has never been an issue with my 5 year old - he doesn't mention skin tone at all when describing his peers, schoolmates and friends. I think that's a huge advancement over where society was 50 years ago.

We have made great strides, but we are not to the finish line.

Oh and the small fact that our society ELECTED A BLACK PRESIDENT last year. Yeah, I think we've made strides.

Wow. I don't know what's worse, the ticket in the OP or the fact that this has blacks eating watermelon.

Honestly...I laughed when I saw that. That is such a ******* sterotype .Most of the black people I know don't even like watermelon.I have never understood that one.

I've never asked anyone besides my oldest son if he likes watermelon.

I think most stereotypes are funny. The Irish like to drink and fight. The Russians are a bunch of vodka swilling commies. The British have bad teeth. Americans are stupid and care little of the rest of the world. White people can't dance. Black guys have huge dongs. Asian's all eat cat. Spanish speaking people will understand English as long as you speak really slowly and louder than a 747. Sportscard collectors are all scumbags that are more or less thieves. They couldn't get laid in a **********. Jews are cheap. Muslim people all want to blow up your world. Christians judge everyone to damnation and believe in a man who said he was God. Catholics are all drunks. Priests are all pedophiles. "Foreigners" all want to live off of "us". Male nurses are all gay. Gay people are pedophiles. Gay people want to infect everyone with their gayness. Women are bad drivers and like to shop for shoes and purses. To speak an Asian language all you have to use is words link ching and chang, tong and ting.

Really, if people believe stuff this stupid, I just don't know what to think.

I come from a family that is a vast majority Irish, I like to drink. True
I have a distant grandparent that was black, I'm packing "heat". True
It's far too late for me to try to be any funnier than I'm trying to be. Racism is as ridiculous as the thought of a woman president.(~)

I actually used to be intrigued by some of the different sterotypes of race and while some of them do hold somewhat true to a small extent, not all of them do.I have actually asked friends about some of these and they either confirm or deny them as did I when I was asked similar questions.Nobody was offended but its certainly not one of the most brought up subjects when you are out in public.
