Set collectors probably had a bit to do with it.
Probably so, but you can't deny with 10 different bidders, this was a war with the Ripken Collectors. :)

Hope we won!

Tell me about it. I was shocked!!
And supposedly, sales are down across the board. :o Really? LOL
Maybe for crappy Prospecting! But Player and set collecting is alive and well!!

Seeing this sale, makes me think my Ripken Red Crusade is worth at least a Bentley! Maybe even a Jag. ;)

As someone who is slowly piecing together a master set of Gold Label basketball, you'd be surprised at some of the prices on the red labels. I've seen some of the bigger name players sell for up to $200 and even the class 3 commons can go over $25. My first example was a Gary Trent class 3 #/25 that started minimum bid of .99 and BIN of 9.99. I figured I could get it less than the BIN and so did others so that got killed quickly, and the auction ended around $18. Gary Trent is a scrub bench player at best.

The best cards are always sought after by player *set* collectors.

Yeah, had that on my watch list. I'm strapped, or I would have picked it up. :(

It depresses me that $156 is considered "insane" for that card. I had the Griffey /100 back in the day and sold it for $300. Oh how times change...

Gold Label are awesome -

I found a dude at a card show selling old packs of this recently;
bought about 20 packs and got a "platinum" #/100

Sold it to the Glaus collector here for about $10 or so ...

- - - I'm STILL looking for some football (Ike Hilliard & Jacquez Green) Gold Label cards - they are hard to find!

I have thought that the 98 and 99 Topps gold labels were nice cards that were a bit undervalued... I figured that the set design with all the classes and labels kept people away. I managed to pick up Manny pretty cheap and filled out my checklist... but in trying to upgrade condition on a few I have gotten blown out of the water over the past year+
