Some odd stats about Moustakas

Some odd things I found in his splits:

At home, his AVG is .211, away, its .288


With the bases empty, (and therefore more breaking balls), he hits .208


With runners on (and less breaking balls) he's at .307


With runners in scoring position, its even higher at .363


The only other info I have to back my theory up that mouse can't hit breaking balls is that when I saw him play, he was swinging at breaking balls that were going 55 feet.

Anyone else support this?

I've already read about his home road splits. This led me to believe he'll have a nice rebound next year when he gets out of that league.

The other numbers can be read several ways, Is he better able to focus in 'clutch' situations, or is it like you said him taking advantage of pitchers under stress?

I think it is not in your best interest to take batting average numbers to determine how he hits breaking balls.

You can make baseball stats work whatever way you want, and you just did that.

Sure, you could work them however you want. But it is a known fact that breaking balls become much more difficult to throw when shortening your stride, and I'm going on that and what I saw in person.

I have seen him play a few times, and I have to agree he absolutely can not hit breaking balls. Whenever he see's a fastball he always hits it hard, but when someone throws him a breaking ball he looks off balanced and lunges and the ball.

It is not uncommon for young sluggers to have trouble with breaking pitches. I would be more worried if he had trouble hitting fastballs. With where he projects to hit in the order, he's going to see a lot of heat. With 3rd base opening back up with Gordon being sent down, it wouldn't shock me to see Moustakas up there next year at some point.

It's all about the process of maturing as a hitter. What he's telling us is that his bat speed is elite and his ability to diagnose fastball situations is right where it needs to be. He obviously needs to work on his pitch recognition in bases empty situations, but I would much rather see him hitting .200 with the bases empty than .200 with RISP.

I absolutely agree. It'd be much harder to figure out how to hit a fastball than handle breaking stuff.
