Oh man......you guys friggin likk me!!

It wouldn't be so funny if it wasn't completelt true!!

Give it another 2 months and elk horns start dropping. For the non-wildlife people.....elk and deer shed their antlers every year and grow new ones.... deer shed their hornd in Late January-Early February and elk do it in mid-March to mid-April.......a passionate pasttime of me and my family is collecting shed antlers. This involves lots of hiking in the early spring looking for them. A brown (freshly shed vs. white which is more than 1 year old on the ground) elk horn will net $10-$15 per pound......a good elk horn is about 12-15 pounds......I guess it's a redneck form of prospecting.....

Yeah, it's real similar to mushroom picking.......but I like to think it's a little more manly.......instead of a frilly basket, I'm walking the woods with a frame pack on my back!! :D :D

As for who buys them, it's all over the board.......but most buyers these days are from big antler craft dealers......antler furniture, chandeliers, etc....

Up until a couple years ago (legislation was passed), most antlers went overseas to China, India, etc..........they are ground up for medicinal purposes in the far east.

Even though the international buyers are gone, the market is still real strong.

Oh, I might add, if it is a trophy animal (380+ B7C points), trophy horn collectors will buy them for upward of $15,000 for a matched set....

Not that easy!!! It takes a lot of hiking around the mountains to find them....if I find 5 or 6 good elk horns in a year, I'm real happy......deer horns are a little bit easire (more of them out there...)

Me and my buddies get together once a year for a long weekend of horn-hunting......3 days of hiking your ass off all day and poker and whiskey at camp at night......great times!

A picture from last year's effort.....
