I think it was a very good buy, and would have jumped on it had I seen it (and I don't even collect him)! Congrats!

I actually think you could make money right away. I'm fairly sure there's a big Russ Martin collector on the board that would love to have it at that price or better.

I could be wrong but that may have been the seller of the card. I remember at one point he was selling of his collection of Martin.

Great pick up. Russell the Muscle is a solid player, but what makes his cards more desirable now is the fact that he plays for the Yankees. Anyone who performs well while being a Yankee will see significant demand from collectors.

Just for simple comparison, i paid $80 for the David Robertson super a few years ago, and sold it last summer for just over $300. When I first bought it i wasn't sure if it was a good buy or a waste of money. A player in pin stripes always has the potential to bring in a decent profit.

I know a member here MartinFFCollector had that card for a while. Not sure if he was the seller this time or not.

I don't think he owned this card and wasn't the seller this time around.

I don't agree at all. This was discussed in a Michael Pineda thread. This sale is kinda the proof I was talking about that free agents and/or players who were traded to the Yankees get little to no more hobby love than before they were Yankees. Martin was a much better seller before he went to the Yankees.

I think the reality is somewhat more nuanced. I believe that being a Yankee helps a lot when a player gets hot or is getting a lot of attention. In general the market for Yanks is not all that different than anyone else, but when a player is getting a lot of attention, it makes a major difference and the spikes are potentially much greater.

I'm in the minority but I have my reason. Martin had a great start last season, hitting tons of HR and that card never reach $200. So in my humble opinion is not a good buy. Even if he perform his 29, his not a prospect anymore, young collector will have other RC to focus on. Plus in the age of AUTO RC this is just a limited print card so it doesn't motivate auto collector to get.

I'm actually with you to a degree and I bought the card lol. Do you know if the card was listed at the beginning of the season when he was hot, and if it sold (and at what price?)

I had that card for years, was the one who got it graded and collected just about everything Martin. I sold the card in April of 2011 for 375.00 and feel that the card is on a downward trend. Even though he is on the Yankees and might even make an All-Star team again, his number keep declining which I think hampers the cards value. It's a beauty and I was reluctant to sell but I did so because once he left the Dodgers it just didn't fit the collection anymore. I have many more Martin first year 1/1's and don't think I'll ever get close to what they could have been worth had his numbers stayed high. No matter if he's a Dodger or Yankee it seems like he just doesn't get as much hobby love as other players.
