Someone explain to me why Stras = Lincy card price wise?

I'm guessing the Stras bowman/500 will go for up to $300, which is about what a Lincy chrome refractor auto/500 goes for.

One guy has already done what most would anticipate what the other guy will do.

Why does anyone think Stras has the Cy potential with Lincy and Doc in the same league, not to mention Ubaldo and others?

Lincy is in the books with 2 Cy's in his first three years. Is that what people really expect Stras to do?

Why buy a Stras for the same price, when you already have pre-Stras (Lincecum) with the awards already under his belt and cemented in history?

It really defies any logic at all.

Come on, it's the Nats. You can already buy Stras three years into the future (Lincecum) now, for the same price. No risk, no injuries, no worrying about the offense. No nothing. Plus it's a chrome, not a base bowman auto.

Why?

People never expected Tim Lincecum to be as great as he was coming up through the minors.

That is why the hype is greater and it almost doesn't matter Lincecum maybe the second or third best pitcher in all of baseball.

Strasburg is expected to tower over everyone else when he gets called up and starts his MLB career.

The expectations are silly, but fans and experts expect Strasburg to win three or four Cy Young Awards by the time he is 26. It will be a disappointment if he doesn't turn out to be another Roger Clemens [in the Rocket's prime, not the PED user in the his late 30s through mid 40s].

Why are Roy Halladay cards not worth more?

pitchers are the bad guys basically.
if you transformed his career numbers to a hitter in the same seasons and dominance they would be worth 3x as much

Lincecum has about a million RC Auto's, Strasburg does not. Even within Bowman/Bowman Chrome Lincecum has something like 2000 base auto's, 500 refractors, 250 xfractors, 150 blue refractors, 50 gold refractors, 25 orange refractors, 5 red refractors and 1 superfractor. Total=2981. Strasburg is slated to have what, 751 or something like that. The potential here is far greater simply based on the numbers, but then you have to keep in mind the tremendous hype that Strasburg has had which will automatically translate to more hobby potential at all levels. Think Mark Prior.

Of course the point you are making about the hype being ridiculous is not lost, but the reality is that the hobby does not work logically. You can still get a Hanley Ramirez Autograph for under $10 despite him being one of the best in baseball.

Me I'll take Lincecum any day...

IMO investing in Strasburg is RISKY....I will leave it at that.

I'm aware of that...as they should be. I'm just saying not all players' cards are "worth" what they should be according to how they play.

For the same reason a Starlin Castro Bowman Chrome Orange refractor sold for as much as a Pujols 01 SPx. Hype. Does anyone here seriously in their heart of hearts think he can hit like he did in his first game? I sure don't, but his stuff exploded on ebay. What happens if Strasburg no-hits the Pirates when he comes up? You think his stuff will still sell for as much as Lincy? Not a snowballs chance in hell. His cards hit the market in a few days and have about a month to build up steam til his debut. You think the Heyward Mania was intense... You aint seen nothing jack

if you are in... and out... at the right times on any prospect there is no risk! especially with the mainstream media hanging from stras's jock strap! his mlb debut will be the headline on every baseball show that day! not to mention the flurry of reports that have already started about his call up!

might i ask why michael stanton bowman chrome autos sell for more than matt kemps bowman chrome autos? and how those are a better investment based upon the same criteria as the pitcher discussion?

I understand the supply and demand thing, Lincy collectors have a greater range of rookie autographs to select from. I'm sure Stras will be scattered throughout most Topps products for the rest of the year, so by definition, these initial bowman offerings will have to go down in price, even if he does decent.

I don't think the Kemp comparison exactly mirrors my point. If Kemp had won the MVP his first two years out of three, sure, Kemp would be more expensive than what the Stantons are going for now. I suppose Stanton has the possibility of making that Mark Mcgwire impact on the hobby (chicks dig the long ball), so I can understand the Stanton hype/prices more than the Stras one.

I understand the performance doesn't equal prices argument as well, but to this extreme (2 Cy young's in the pocket after three years versus maybe? the potential for a Cy Young once in the next three years?) just baffles me.

Thanks for the responses, everyone, I guess this just tells me that Lincecum chrome autos are still significantly UNDERvalued at this time, per se, and yes, I imagine EVERYONE will be selling their Stras's as soon as they are pulled.

Thank goodness there are collectors/casual buyers of sports cards who have too much money than what they know what to do with it out there.

Anyone planning on player collecting Stras? How are you going to approach acquiring his cards.
