I have one from 1982. The 200th Issue!

They are very aware of their place in the hobby:

Filled with advertisements, Sports Card Digest (SCD) was the first card "magazine" I ever got. Most kids sat with their Sears catalog and dreamed of what they wanted, I sat with SCD and dreamed of what I wanted. I bought posters and magazines mostly, things that I couldn't find at my local card shop. I bought a few random oddball sets. Wish I would have focused more on single cards or sets!!! I will give you a rundown of it, just a random assortment of things. Sorry for the rambling!
Here are some examples of advertisements:

Hmmm...an ex/mt 1952 Topps set for $6,950? Not bad. Wonder how many they had!

IMG_2776_zpseb131833.jpg

$6.95 for a Gretzky RC set? $8.95 for a set w/ Bird/Magic/Erving? (I actually bought a couple of these sets back then! Split them all apart!)

IMG_2776_zpseb131833.jpg

Almost every dealer was selling sets of the current year product, 1982 Topps, 1982 Fleer, and 1982 Donruss.
Average set prices were
82 Topps: 12.25
82 Fleer 8.95
82 Donruss 9.95

Although, many also sold a set of your choice, a binder! and 50 sheets!! for $25!! THose were hot deals!

Another major sell was boxes and cases of cards. A case of a 1982 product was about $140
One dealer had a nice special: Case: $39 down, and 4 monthly payments of $25 each!

THis issue had a review of the 1982 Fleer set
IMG_2778_zps80f57f1c.jpg

Interesting read. The reviewer disliked the set, hated the photography, and thought the special cards were silly. HE also was upset that there were no manager cards this year! "A real letdown"!! He ranked 1982 Donruss well above Fleer.

The 1982 Donruss Checklist was included later in the issue, with RC of Brett Butler and Mike Marshall getting the photo examples!

Oh, here's another ad for Rookie cards, a 1955 Clemente RC for $95? I wonder if that's good.
IMG_2787_zps02cd6c6b.jpg

TONS of card show ads, most of them had special guests:
IMG_2779_zpsca49e448.jpg

Here's a small article about a new card show in a town called White Plains, NY... I wonder if this is the 1st? I feel like I've heard of this...
IMG_2784_zps7700649a.jpg

Pictures from Mickey Mantle, at 50 years old, comes back to NY for the "New York 1" Baseball Card show at the Statler Hilton Hotel. Mickey and Duke were signing.

Even the great Greg Luzinski came to a show at the Deleware Valley Show in Prussia, PA

A small article about another show where the guest is not showing up. In summary: Steve Carlton is not coming to the Troy Hilton card show in Detroit. According to the promoter, Carlton agreed to come for $2900, plus $2.50 for every auto. Promoter is refunding the $7 advanced autograph tickets.

Bob feller sold his All-Star jersey to two people at the same time. SCD was tryng to get to the bottom of it. To Quote from the article about Bob Feller selling his All-Star uniform to two different people, "It seems Feller made more promises than he had strikeouts in his career."
If any other SCD readers bought one, please contact SCD.

Another small article about a new trend in Autographs. Willie Stargell and Tim Raines started "selling their autos to the public". Rod Carew followed suit, with an ad is this specific SCD:
IMG_2785_zpse10cf115.jpg

The article ended with about 50 more addresses of baseball player O-P. Looks like it was a regular part of the magazine.

Here's some more examples of prices for interesting cards pulled from random ads:
Reggie Rookie: $20
Ryan Rookie: $12
Bench RC $10
53 Bowman Color Mantle: $140
51 Bowman Mays: $245
53 Topps Mantle $150
55 Clemente $60
56 Mantle $45
56 Koufax $12
48 Leaf Williams $75

Some names from the past throughout SCD (ahhh, memories):
Kit Young, Hall's Nostalgia, Larry Fritsch Cards, Richard Gelman, Rotman

Different companies selling plastic sheets throughout SCD(No Ultra Pro?):
Safe-T-Pages
Rotman Plastic Sheets
Tomarc Enterprises
Baldwin Plastic Pages
Photo Organizer Plus

A part of an article talking about the Hall of Fame voting coming up soon. Hank Aaron. Should he be unanimous? The writer says, "Not likely, since some writers never vote 1st timers..."
(Sound familiar)

Another thing sounding familiar is the article about the "Information Gap" and getting kids involved (or keeping them involved)
IMG_2786_zpsd9acc27d.jpg

150 kids came to a "session" and they were most intrigued by the "authentic uniforms"...sounds Prophetic If You ask Me.

Oh me likely this!

And that white plains show still happens 5-6 times a year. It's the one you see posted on Fcb.

Also was the first show mantle charged I believe.

Oh man, these '80s topics are my favorite kinds of threads. It was my favorite era of collecting by far since I was an '80s kid.
I have dozens of Baseball Card Magazines, Baseball Hobby News and Beckett Monthys, but only a few '80s SCDs, so it's cool to see this.
I can't believe that was 32 years ago! Collecting was so fun and innocent back then.

And yes, I agree with the reviewer. The '82 Fleer set was a piece of garbage, and had by far the worst and blurriest photography of any set. Even the Old Judge sets from the 1880s had clearer photograph, which is mind-boggling.

Awesome idea for a thread, and I'm glad this is going to be a series.

P.S. Sorry about your hero passing away.

Sadly, I never picked up an SCD until they'd really branched out into other sports and at that point had no interest in anything but baseball. As a result I never got to know SCD like it seems nearly everyone else in the hobby.

Back in 85 or 86, a friend introduced me to SCD. I loved it and subscribed to it shortly after.

In late 86, I remember going to the mailbox and receiving the latest copy which had IMAGES OF 87 DONRUSS!!!!!

I was excited to say the least!

I subscribed to it for about 15 years.

I thought another interesting thing was the constant reference to "errors"...1981 must have had a ton of them, but I was not really into that sort of thing. I do remember the "C"raig Nettles stuff, I guess, That was 1981, right?
"Error boxes for sale, "error" sets for sale, etc...

I had so many of those SCD's that each week, if it wasnt for the stories, they kinda all ran together as at one point, they were released every 2 weeks. The stories changed but the advertisments didnt. You'd call one of the numbers and they'd be out of the product for months (advertisment time vs press time vs circulation was a factor). If they wasnt out of it, they boosted the price 20%.

I loved it though, I would use it at some shows to help lower prices on certain items I was wanting to buy. I take it with me and show certain dealers that I an get the same item out of SCD for much cheaper including shipping and use it as a bargaining chip!

A quick correction . . . that's Sports Collectors Digest.

Interesting side note, the guy who wrote the article panning (rightfully so) 1982 Fleer later went to work for Fleer.
