Does any one have it? If so I was wondering what information you could give me on the Brook Treakle postcards. In particular the 1981 Lynchburg Mets Darryl Strawberry. Any help is much appreciated!!

I had no idea there was a SC for minor league cards. Another giant book to seek out for the shelf.

I could be wrong, but I believe they were much smaller. Lots fewer minor league sets issued until the early late 80s/early 90s explosion of sets.

Technically there were only two editions, the latest in 2000. Then from 2001-2005, the new minor league set information was just tacked on the end of the regular Standard Catalog. After 2005, they effectively abandoned adding new minor league checklist information.

There's one on Amazon, the 2000 edition that is listed at 9x11, 480 pages. As baseball card books go, I'm counting that as "giant" even if it's not as big as the Major League Standard Catalog. I just like having big card books. Price guides, auction catalogs, etc. I got the Smithsonian Baseball book for Christmas, it's pretty awesome.

These are technically “custom” postcards produced by photographers such as Brook Treakle, Mel Bailey, Ed Broder, and Mike Andersen. They were sold only to collectors or friends. Typically, the photographers advertised them in hobby publications.

Brook printed some for players and collectors. I don’t think he printed more than a handful of each. The ones appearing for sale most frequently are Don Mattingly (1982 Clippers), Cal Ripken, Jr. (Rochester 1981), and Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry. There’s also a Richmond Dale Murphy postcard.

I don’t think their true value will be realized until years into the future. Brook passed away in 1991. Most of the postcards and photos produced were for his personal collection. His goal was to have a postcard of every player who ever were a Cleveland Indians’ uniform. I was told he was about 95% there before passing away.

That's good info. Thanks for dropping the knowledge.

And props for resurrecting this long dead thread!

Thanks. Always enjoy talking about postcards, photos, and minor league stuff. Brook Treakle did all three. Also shot the photos for the 1980 Peninsula Pilots TCMA set with Julio Franco.
