At my son's school, they encourage parents to get involved and host clubs. My son said to me this summer that I should do a card club there. I put it off and he brought it up again recently and I told him I'd look into it. I didn't think the principal would think it was "academic" enough but she thought it was great and said they like doing fun things at school too. She figured I better limit to 2nd grade as the turnout may be more than what I think. So, I've been coming up with subjects to talk about as some of the hour will be that and there will be time to look at cards and get free ones too. I thought I'd throw it out there to see if any of you had ideas for what to talk about, keeping in mind these are 2nd graders. Also, if any of you have base cards or cheap inserts (especially of MN Twins, Vikings, Wild, Timberwolves, Packers, Brewers, and Bucks but won't turn down anything) or any kind of sports stickers/tattoos and want to send them my way, please PM me for my address.

Thanks a bunch!

If you need an educational angle, go with math. Have them look at the stats, and figure out what they mean, how to compare them, how to figure out percentages, (a batting av., era, etc.) Compare how being successful 30% of the time in baseball is good, but 30% successful in basketball is bad.

PM me your addres, and I can work on a variety box of stuff.

Math is definitely an option. There are also tons of baseball books that they can read, so reading is another possibility. Truth be told so is science (physics would obviously be way over their heads, but bringing up the concepts may actually create a lifelong interest in science, and there's also a major history element.) Throw in teamwork, finance, management, hard work, etc. and you can learn just about anything from baseball...

You could also have them all write TTM letters to their favorite players; would teach them how to write a letter (do people even need that skill anymore?) and use correct grammar, etc.

Only catch would be that their favorite players might be tough signers. Perhaps they could all write to Pat Neshek...

I was going to suggest this. I remember doing this at in 4th grade at the urging of my teacher.

Also, you could contact the PR departments for your local sports teams. I would imagine that they would have some sort of fan packs or team sets or something that they could send for the club.

Another thought might be getting local dealers involved. They may be interested in investing in future customers.

Have all the kids right request letters for fanpacks for their favorite teams. Most teams will send something in the mail back.

EDIT: One team that is great with stuff like this is the Reds, They almost always send some great stuff when kids are involved

I like this idea. If theres a local MiLB team, perhaps you could write to them, and possibly take a 'field trip' to a game.

This is a great idea. I will be head of a cub scout committee, and I think this would be a great club to get the boys together and collect and work on sports questions like those above. Thanks for the idea, and good luck with your group!

You may want to specify that it is a sports card club or you will be overrun by Pokemon cards.

I don't know if they still do it, but Topps used to send out a cool packet of 20 binders/packs/little books about collecting to the Boy Scouts groups or stores where the Scouts could come and I'm sure they let you have something similar if they have it...

my wife is a teacher and one of her books stated that kids math scores were higher if involed in sports cards - stats etc.

I am because I have no interest in Pokemon and even better, they are one of two kinds of cards that are banned at school. :)
