First of all I was a pretty big collector in the 90's - 2005. Baseball, Football, and Basketball.

I have a 2 year old son and I was wanting to get him a card every year for his birthday. Which I wanted to go back and get a rookie card of the #1 draft pick each year. I would have to go back to 2013 Mark Appel. I need opinions about which rookie card brands are the best and usually keep the best value. I would like to get every year the saem brand say "Topps Chrome" or "Bowman Chrome" etc.

Please give me you opinions and thoughts. Also if interested in a good sized collection from 90's-2005 let me know. I have a few cards older than that also.

Thanks

Probably Bowman Chrome for #1 picks that hold their value. Maybe get that and then, if that isn't the one that's most visually appealing, even if it's a base card, pick one of those up too.

Good luck !

So Bowman Chrome for #1 draft picks. But you said something about if it's not the most appealing get a different brand?

I wouldn't worry so much about Beckett. You can do an advanced ebay search to look at "completed listings" and see how much items have sold for recently. Just keep in mind that cards sold for a best offer will show the original asking price, not necessarily the price that was accepted, but it works well to see finished auctions. This will give you a good idea of which cards collectors are placing the higher demand on (but yes, 99% of the time it is the earliest Bowman Chrome autograph)

Yes, I agree that Bowman is the way to go for holding it's value. Get the one with the "1st Bowman Card" logo.

Uhm, since we're talking about value, number 1 overall picks rarely pan out. You're better off buying proven guys from each year as they actually develop. Might be more of a waiting game.

For instance, Appel...I'd save my money. Just my thoughts.

What about which year is the actual rookie card? I mean Appel for example was drafted in 2013 but he has 2011 cards USA team and 2013 rc 2014 rc 2015 rc ???

Also do you guys think I should go with graded or not and which graded company is the best/worst???

The idea though was to get my 2 year old the number one pick every year for his birthday... If I wanted to do this o would have to back track two years... And his birthday is April 30th so every year I won't have the luxury of waiting to see if they pan out.

I get what your saying though cause number one pick will be valued high right away and most don't pan out

When does a players true rookie card come out? Drafted year or year they actually make mlb 25 man roster?

2014 Bowman-Chrome-Prospects-Green-Refractors-Mark-Appel- #45 /75. Does this seem like a good rookie card? It says 1st Rookie card on it. But there are 2013 stars on the back?? Is this the correct year?

The first card in an MLB uniform is going to be a Bowman card. If you're just going for the novelty of the 1st overall pick, who cares if he pans out. I like the idea.

I would get a Bowman Chrome autograph card, not a refractor or any other color (that's just the OCD in me, but some of the legit talent could price you out of a certain color, AND Bowman releases like to mess around with the colors). I like the idea of getting it graded (BGS or PSA, but I would want the same each year; probably BGS.)

The only thing is you already have a problem in that Brady Aiken, the 2014 #1 1st Round pick didn't sign, so there is (and will never be) effectively no card of the 2014 #1 draft pick. One suggestion would be to get him the #1 for his first birthday, the #2 for his second (Tyler Kolek in 2014), and the #3 from this year (Brendan Rogers), and so on.

You should be able to get an autographed version, but you might have to wait until the following year. You'll notice that Mark Appel was drafted in 2013, but his first MLB card is from a 2014 product. You might want to stay a year behind, considering the date of your son's birth.

If all else fails, you could just get him a complete Topps set each year, or build the first Topps series each year with him, getting a jumbo box or 2 and then trading for the rest. It's something to do with him that would last longer than the gift giving.

Thanks for the advice... I see how much they are selling for on eBay... But how much is this card worth not graded and graded? Book value? Just curious. Just the bowman chrome auto 1st bowman card.

In this day and age of collecting and with eBay controlling the market, book value has almost no relevance anymore. Something is only worth what someone will pay for it, and if no one is going to pay what Beckett says something is worth, then there is no point in referencing it.

Completed listings on Ebay is the new book value. Hive17 explained it very well.
