There's a ton of stats that are pretty telling, but often get overlooked. Noticed this one looking at the numbers today:
Yovani Gallardo's BB/9 has dropped over the last few seasons from:
2009 - 4.6
2010 - 3.6
2011 - 2.7
It's a solid improvement, but may not even be telling the whole tale.
In 2011, Gallardo walked 39 batters over 103.1 innings from March - June which works out to 3.4 per 9 innings. In July and August though, Gallardo has pitched 64 innings and walked just 11 guys. That comes out to 1.5 walks per 9 innings.
Not surprisingly, his ERA has dropped along with the walks, and if he can come close to maintaining the improvements, it's a great step toward becoming a legit ace.
Anyone else notice any stats that may be falling under the radar?
