As mentioned earlier in the thread, the problem with large stashes is that if a player only spikes for a week or a month, you can't unload all of your stash for risk of completely flooding the market. If you have a large stash, you have to expect the player to have a prolonged hot streak or become a regular figure in the majors. If you don't have full confidence this will happen, it probably is a better idea to diversify.

I've got 20 of these /179. I don't think that many sold when they were sold on ebay by razor. So, the total out there may be less than 40. Hopefully, Razor won't release the rest.

I did well on Travis Snider even though I got into him late. I lived on ebay the night Sterling came out and ended up with the 1st Black for $108 BIN. Sold it a couple weeks later for $390. Ended up owning 6 of them, 8 refs (5 gemmed) and 22 base autos. I made a killing off of them.

I did really well hoarding all of the D.J. Strawberry Elite Redemptions also :D They were also the quickest flips I ever made. Sold way too soon though!!!

My 1st actual attempt at prospecting was Brett Anderson and then I just got attached and couldn't sell.

The thing with hoarding tons and tons of cards, is unless you have the kind of cash to drop on a Heyward, Montero, Stanton, Moustakas type elite prospect, you're going to be buying a risky, semi-sleeper type guy.

I'll tell you one thing, there is no way I'll be putting a couple grand into a guy like Jon Gilmore again. No way.

I would much rather buy the elite guys, and put together solid stashes instead of flashy behemoths, because the chance to make money is much greater.

That's sort of how I feel. I never really hoarded any risky prospects, but I have diversified with a bunch of risky prospects. If I'm going to hoard, I'm going to hoard the elite guys, not only because they have the best chance at success, but because if they start to suck, you have a pretty large window to bailout. Once the risky guys start putting up bad numbers, you start to see there values fall almost instantaneously.

You got that right. Cards of lesser known guys, especially cards like base Chrome Autos through Blues, are EXTREMELY volatile. They will fall like a brick.

For me, large hoards become hard to unload.

I'm not the most disciplined prospector to begin with, but at some point a stash starts to feel like a collection.

Then you're hosed.

All rational thought goes out the window.

Hmm, i currently have 3% of all Montero Refractor autos..and even though they're worth about 40-50% more than what i paid...I wonder if i could get to owning 10% of the population ?

Stupid compulsive hoarding pathology

It worked out well for me with Jonathan Sanchez. I had 14 gold refractors, along with numerous blue refs, x's and refs. I had a red refractor and a stack of base chromes. Sold about half after a good outing on Sunday night baseball, and then the rest after his no hitter.

Gaby Hernandez, didn't work out so well. About 80 chromes, 4 or 5 SP Prospects autos, a bunch of sterling. Boo.

Pedro Beato, even worse. I think I have about 120 autos of his including chrome and sterling, including a red refractor, 2 golds, 2 oranges, and numerous amounts of each other parallel. Dammit.

I have about $1.5k in mark melancon :D

but my collection is pretty sick. I have around 7 1/1's and around 90-100 auto's including red refractors, orange refs, gold refs, etc

really hope he has a good spring training next year and makes the team! :D

At least Melancon is a Yankee. Beato is in Baltimore, and he is no Markakis or Reimold. Hell, I even made a few bucks off of Daniel Cabrera. One thing I want to do, since I collect autographed baseballs, is get an auto'd ball of every prospect I have bought who has failed. So far it is Gaby and Beato. I'll get one of Sanchez too, just because he was such a big investment.

For Wes Hodges I have out of 2007 BC alone :
1-auto plate 1/1
3-auto red refractors
5-auto orange refractors
12-auto gold refractors
21-auto blue refractors
10-auto xfactors
52-auto refractors
139-auto base

This does not include over 100 other autos, 21 plates, several IP and TTM autos, and many auto items. I collect him and always will, I do not plan on selling anything of his.

By the way always buying his stuff.

I will post my numbers later when I hit my office.

I'm sure i've seen you post your numbers before, but can you do so again? I'm curious where you bought in and sold. I've been looking at his current prices and am thinking about buying a few (799 that is).

Thanks!

JA Happ did quite well for me, but he had a strong season that gave me a nice long time to sell. I'm sold out now, but I made a substantial amount of money. Big stashes are very very risky, but I tend to collect that way...I'm a hoarder.

I agree. I should've probably sold some Johnson stuff after he dualed with Johan in his second game of the season, but I didn't. Topps Chrome Black Refractors were hitting $50 and the regular Topps Chrome Refractors were at $30 a pop. I'm too stingy and enjoy hoarding too much to even let one go. :(

Next year, if he starts hot, I may, just may, flip a couple dupes. That'd be it though. Nothing that I only have one of.

I too am one of those Prospector->turned Collector.

For example, my Hernan Irribarren collection. I'm not being smug, but it is probably THE best hoard anyone has of him as far as high-end parallels go. I also have a sneaking suspicion that my Alcides Escobar HOARD will turn out to be a COLLECTION.

Mat Gamel made me enough money that I can keep what I didn't sell.

Of course, if Escobar and Gamel blow up, I'm no fool; I'll sell them like I was Hansel and Gretal's father.

My Michael Bowden stash seems to be making its way towards a collection rather than a prospect stash. Luckily I made some money off him early so I'm into about $500 worth of stuff for $300 or so. So if he continues to falter, it won't be the end of the world. He is by far the most I've spent on a single player outside of my PC.

Here are the numbers.

bought in / sold / profit
3 reds - $427 / 889.99 / 462.99

6 blues - 541.23 / 1099.99 / 558.76

8 totc - 490.72 / 880.00 / 389.28

45 base - 1897.94 / 4397.99 / 2500.05

total profit - $3911.08

I sold the base for an average of $68. Some would say I sold way to early but I was very happy with my 1st and only prospect.

Nice work! I'd be happy with a $4K profit :). Look like the /799s had the best profit per card for you.
