Well, I think as far as selling cards is concerned, I don't know if I even want to do it anymore after, going tonight and seeing how between ebay idiots, and beckett comng up with prices from the middle of nowhere, just RUINING the hobby. RUINING it PRICE WISE. For those who have a online subsciption, the prices for contenders is absolutely a DUMBA$$ idioticy.

When on ebay stuff sells for 3 digits, and they list it at barely the price of a couple of gallons of gas, this is not only STUPID, but very DISSAPOINTING, to the extent of NOT wanting to collect anymore, cause they make up prices out of thin air, and it is COMPLETELY BS. I am cancelling my subsciption, it's as simple as that. I am taking a break, cause these prices are ridiculous. Dan, at Beckett must be either some kind of fortune teller, or I have NO IDEA where they come up with their prices. If you can check the prices, please take a look. What the luck books at, NONE have sold for remotely close to it. The SP rookie autos, you might as well wipe your you-know-what with them, cause that's about what the cards are worth.

Beckett.....SERIOUSLY?????....Thanks for ruining little people, like myself, and my friends, who does this to try and make a few extra bucks. WE CANT anymore, thank to your incompetence. I salute those on Ebay, who tried to make some money, and for some, you made a absolut STEAL!!!

I apologize to the board for my rant, but I see now, why so many card shops are NOT only closing, but even shows are becoming obsolete, and I applaud those on Ebay who again, made the most for what they could. I just don't understand guys, I just don't understand.....

I appreciate eveyone's time, and feel free to leave a opinion if you want to.

Don't know what to say Dave other than most of us gave up on Beckett years ago. Once the majority of the civilized world came online it was apparent pretty early Beckett never "researched" squat. Its why we give people weird looks when they try to quote "book" prices around here. You'll hear people talk about "cash value (cv)" or street value referring to prices that cards have actually sold for in the real world and can be found with a quick internet search. The realization sucks but collecting is actually better once you realize Beckett is a worthless steaming pile

Really, quitting the hobby because of Beckett?!?!? Nobody gives 2 poops what their guide says something books for, especially new stuff. If it's selling for more than book on eBay then that's pretty much what it's worth. I'm not one that completely buys ebay as a guide but when it comes to hot stuff, it definitely is. Where Beckett is useful is on older non-hot stuff as it gives you some guidelines for how much stuff is worth if you aren't in a hurry to sell. However, they have even been screwing that up lately when they decided to start lowering book values on tough late 90's inserts for no reason at all.

eBay is the only price guide out there.
Beckett is worthless. In all honesty, I wonder how much longer they will last. The only thing they have is the grading.

It does hurt the hobby, cause I noticed after prices were listed, sales prices on Ebay went down, on SOME of the sp contenders autos. When they list one of the sp guys playoff ticket auto for 1/6th of what the lowest price has been completed, there is a SERIOUS issue somewhere with how they do their jobs. I'm going to be at a show tomorrow, and I KNOW what I am going to hear. "How come you want $80 for a card that only books for $12.00, and how come you want FULL BOOK of 1 short print.?"........It's TOTALLY ridiculous, and while I appreciate your comments about NOT wanting me to quit the hobby, it's NOT going to be worth the headache of having 1 showcase FULL of Contenders autos, that ONLY book for 10-20% of what they SELL for......Does Beckett have a monkey throwing darts at a board full of prices, to come up with their "so-called guide"??.....They are misleading the rookie collector, thinking they should be able to buy a super short print guy, for $5-$12??.....Even at that, the SHORTEST regular rookie ticket has a price when NOBODY on these boards, has ever saw 1 sell, or be listed (As of when I checked a few hours ago)....Guys, PLEASE tell me how I can make money this way??...OTHER DEALERS are my BIGGEST customers, and they WON'T pay 5X book value for something, especially the ones who don't do Ebay. So I can't say to them "This is what it's selling on Ebay, cause they ONLY care about book value....So I am tired of the prices on stuff being slayed, like the beckett dragon....At this point, I should start collecting marbles, rocks, or bottle caps, cause it HAS to be LESS stressful than this....I don't see how we, or in my case, a small-time seller, can make anything?.....I appreciate the well-wishes, but is there a point to doing shows anymore, if your going to LOSE money...Any IDEAS GUYS?????????

Examples of these prices?

Not implying for a second the you're wrong, just curious how obvious it is.

That is this Beckett thing you speak of? I remember there was this thing called a Beckett that was published monthly that was once considered the bible of card pricing....have looked/needed one in about 8 years.

If you are only trying to sell contender autos, you aren't going to be successful anyways.

Anyone that deals in this hobby / business on a regular basis understands that Beckett doesn't mean XXXX.

So if a "dealer" comes up to you and isn't paying the going rate for a card, then sell it elsewhere.

I'm not sure if I touched on all of your points, as your writing was hard to read with lack of paragraphs.

Like people have said above, nobody gives creedence to beckett pricing anymore. If people on eBay are being difficult because of the prices, those are the people you don't want to be dealing with anyway. Try not to let them get you worked up, because honestly they're not even worth it. If anything, it'll get you to stop paying for your online pricing which to be honest you should have stopped paying for years ago

we may all say, ahh beckett blah blah blah, but the OP is right, beckett still has clout with many and if a card is selling for 200 and then books for 80, I can guarantee you that it is going down after that. Plain and simple, beckett should not be pricing these rare cards this early.

Of course they are trying to sell early pricing, so it makes sense for them. I would be pissed to...plus contenders sucked this year.

thats all.

IMO, the only reason you get guys at shows using Beckett is so they can overcharge on stuff. Even if a card books for a certain price in Beckett, on eBay it affects the price very little if the card is sp'd and in demand. At this point, I'm not even sure Beckett could ruin the hobby if they tried. Whatever clout they may have goes out the window when it comes to hot items.

Like everyone else said, majority of collectors stopped using book value for new product about 8-10 years ago.

I really am surprised it is still even discussed in anything outside of vintage and even vintage is making the transition to using completed sales to base prices off.

Well, when's the last time any of us paid book value for anything? Even the value itself listed in Beckett is a range and it's such a large range that it's not really too accurate. If low book is twenty dollars and high book is fifty, that's a thirty dollar range. Even using an average based on those two numbers, thirty five dollars, is kinda weird because why not just list the price at thirty five dollars and call it done? I see how they price stuff though. They aren't pricing individual cards, they are getting an average of similar cards and using it for everything with pluses and minuses depending on other variables like popularity of set, price per box, ect.. It's not a horrible formula but it's outdated as soon as it hits the press.
