I needed pattern 81 to complete my first set of O'neill. After about 15 years I found that pattern. During the same year while working on my second set I acquired two more 81's from trades, lots, etc. and even saw one on eBay that someone bought for the opening bid. So never seeing one in 15 years to obtaining or seeing 4 it brings hope to your search. I'm now two away from my second set and patterns 14 and 90 are my new nemeses.

mr cub 1938, who is down to needing 42 cards to finish his 8100 card master set, also needs the O'neill patterns 14 and 90.

Do you know the complete 42 needs? Would be interesting if he needs the same cards as others of us.

I have mr cub 1938's want list and suggested he post it everywhere he can think of. That worked well for me back when. His call. I believe that for every jerk out there who would hold a card Don needed for ransom there are 100 who would be very happy to help Don out. It's the kind of thing that spurs people to dust off some boxes and check what they have. (Don did finish his Lankford set.)

I am of the belief that there is a fairly even distribution of the 98 Tek base patterns. There are a lot of player collectors who have finished their player's set or even two or three sets, and a half dozen or so of us who finished the set of 8100. I remember posting the calculation some time ago that if we assume a diffractor print run of 10 cards per diffractor pattern per player, there are about 250 cards for each base pattern per player. When I was working on the set of 8100, I was not afraid to trade a card out of my PC set if I could get a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 return from a player collector's duplicates.

Larry, @captainJ, from Riverside, Cal. finished the set of 8100 back in 2003. He was Da Man in 2001 when I decided to expand my 98 Tek collection of Red Sox players and go for the whole set. He got down to about 100 to go when I needed about 1000. He would get pessimistic about finishing, and kept saying that I would finish before him. When he was down to needing three cards for the set (I was around 200 to go), he told me he had a lead on one of them. I pulled the other two out of my set (both Indians players) and sent them to him, then he did get the third card in. He couldn't believe he finally finished the set. About a week later, he mailed me one of the cards back. Someone else found the same card for him. The other card turned up on eBay about a week later. I would be wary of doing that today. It was most definitely easier to collect '98 Teks 10 years ago than today the way eBay identified other bidders, and these days set collectors have gobbled up a lot of the superstar players' cards, but think about collecting a set with cards numbered #/250. IMO that's really all the 98 Tek base cards are.

Fascinating, Rich. So you think each pattern is #/250 or so? That's great stuff.

Yeah Rich, that was a really interesting story about Larry finishing up his 8100 card Tek set. I can't imagine what it feels like to get the last card of a set that big that takes years to finish.

Later today I'm sending Don the Edgar Martinez pattern #78 card, which should leave him needing only 41 more. Keep me up to date if you send him any.

I puchased the Thome pattern #28 off ebay last week for $1.97 shipped. Must not be many Thome Tek collectors out there. I only need 14 more to finish the Thome set!

I was noticing today that there were 42 Albert Belle Tek cards available on Ebay, Sportlots, and Beckett Marketplace. At that rate you would think a pattern #2 would show up in the not too distant future. :) On the other hand I was noticing that there were only 6 Thome Tek cards on those 3 sites. Hopefully, the 14 cards I'm looking for show up in the near future.

Should be fun to watch the twenty 4 card lots of Ripken Teks on ebay that end Monday afternoon. Kind of sad to see a Tek collector get rid of his player collection Tek cards.
