Merry Christmas to me!! Hope everyone else had a great holiday. Drove down from the hills of western Mass to Arlington VA to visit my older daughter and her husband for Thanksgiving, and came home with several wrapped Christmas presents. No tie, book, board game, or magazine subscription this year. Nope. When I opened one box, inside were two unopened baseball card boxes: a 1993 Ted Williams box (a great inexpensive set for baseball history fans) and a 1998 Topps Tek box. She found some Tek boxes for me a year or so ago when she was on business in Phoenix and was bored enough to ask her younger sister what cards I collected, and browsed a large card store there. She came home with several '98 Tek boxes back then. Just one '98 Tek box this time, but what a box! Haven't cracked the Ted Williams box yet, I'm still drooling over the Teks! Her sister told me she got these two boxes at a card store in Maryland for $75 total for the two boxes (the Williams' boxes usually run around $25 to $30, so $40 to $50 or so for the Tek box). I asked if the store just had the one box of '98 Teks, but she didn't know the answer. I will find out!
One box--four diffractors, all new for me: a Frank Thomas, a Mark McGwire, an Edgar Martinez, and a Mark Grace. I've opened a fair number of boxes over the years and I'm sure I never got that nice a group of diffractors (and no dupes!). (I even saved the checklists. If someone is going to pay money for them, why not? 3 for $5.00 anyone?) Two of the packs had five base cards; four cards in all the rest. The cards were all high quality. No messed up ovals, or shadowing, or ink spots, or water spots. The diversity in the cards was amazing. I got two Robin Ventura patterns, only one of the other 76 players.
I matched the base cards against different want lists I have from other collectors. I let Don Apland know I found two from his ever-shrinking list on the way to 8100. Struck out on all the other want lists: 0 Bonds for Elberson, 0 Belle for MansGame, 0 same card#/pattern# or mint replacements for Togatx, 0 A Jones for AndruwHRJones, 0 Gwynn for Gywnn545, 0 Buhner for RustyGreerFan, 0 Burnitz for BrewerAndy.
Anyone else with a want list for base '98 Tek cards for specific players, feel free to send me your want list. I trade my extras freely; I don't hold cards hostage. I'll check want lists, but just don't have the time right now to list everything I have to trade. I would just as soon trade for other '98 Teks or '98 Tek diffractors of roughly equivalent value (dupes or not). I have some base card extras of all 90 of the players in the '98 Tek series, and some diffractor extras of 77 of the 90 players in the '98 Tek series. I am NOT looking to sell '98 Tek diffractors. I am also NOT looking to sell a large group of '98 Tek base cards below book value. If you have nothing to trade, I will sell most '98 Tek base cards at current Beckett high BV and a couple of bucks for postage. Send me a PM or post to the forum.
