1999 Topps Tek is the poor middle child of Topps Tek. It has to live up to the expectations set by his older brother. And his parents just didn't feel they had perfected it, so the parents gave it one last attempt (2000 Topps Tek), and realized that they were never going to have a "child" as good as the first born, so they they had their tubes tied to NEVER try for another!

Haha well said

so do any of you chatty Cathys have any lists of 98 TEKs dupes or want lists other than the Bonds . I am happy to announce that while it is not 1998 TEK I FINALLY completed a 2003 Playoff Portraits 72 card PROMO set Ive been trying to find that last card for 3 years and then picked up two of card # 69 Magglio Ordonez from COMC the same day that came out of the blue. I was beginning to think the Ordonez Promo card didn't exist Now focusing on finishing two more 250 card Fleer Focus 2000 Masterpiece Mania set with each card numbered to 300 and my 2005 and 2006 Turkey Red White Border sets (38 to go in 2005 and a Ripken 582 the last one in 2006 set) trying to make a dent in those before year end..

I guess I'm in the minority, but I like 1999 Tek better than 1998. I think the backgrounds, with their baseball content, make more sense. I like the gold foil and their known and stamped rareness of 10 copies per pattern. I like the home and away jersey variations breaking up the monotony of the base cards. I think 1999 greatly improved on 1998. 2000 definitely got too complicated. 1998 was just base and a parallel and was really pretty boring. Diffractors and their mysterous print run and obvious scarcity are the only thing 98 has going for it, well that and a low total product production run. 90 base patterns wasn't that interesting.

I agree with the backgrounds for 1999 being superior. Very cool. But I like Diffractor effects better than gold. Also, I despise the coloring on the bottom portion of '99s - looks painted on or cartoonish. I like the 98 nameplates much more. Just think if the 99 backgrounds were made with 98 Diffractor effects - that would have been cool.
