to let you know it does exist while its not for trade I have a Pattern # 68 Diffractor of Oneill. I have two others, 21 and 79, in my competed or partially completed diffractor sets, which you have so we know there are least 3 of pattern # 79 and Mr Roth has one in his collection I believe

Wonder how many of each diffractor card there actually is

I have found in my TEK collecting that pattern# 36 has been the most difficult pattern to find in mint condition and had problems with scratching off of intricate design. I did an extensive QC check two years ago and identified around 40-50 cards in Master set that were not in mint or near mint condition that either had spots, black dots, peeling of the edges of the silver oval on the back that has the card #/pattern# or misalignment of the card # /pattern# within that silver oval. Seven of those 40-45 were pattern # 36 cards. None of the cards were in terrible shape, just blemishes that distracted a bit from the card. I am down to these for condition upgrades
now... There is one of them on ebay, a Kevin Brown 71 pattern # 36, but you can see from the picture the card is scratched up..

Carl,

We've all been wondering about how many of each diffractor patterns there are. That question seems to surface every month or so. A while ago, I had three duplicates of Roger Clemens diffractor pattern 1 plus the one in my master set. Someone else, may have been you, had another. So that was five patterns of that one diffractor confirmed. I currently have three of 21 different diffractor patterns, and I don't deliberately look for duplicates. Odds are way against me having that percentage of any one pattern if the number printed/released was as small as five. I suppose I could let one of my brothers tie up a super-computer for 30 seconds or so and run the probabilities based on my collection, and come up with a likely number, but my guess is it should be a minimum of 10 of each pattern. And I have real doubts that there has been an even release of diffractor patterns based on my comparing my diffractor collection to other player collectors' collections -- too much duplication in the collections. I just compared Kevin, Yanks2151 and my O'Neill diffractor collections. He has 23 O'Neill diffractors and I have 35. Put them together: 38 different diffractor patterns.

I dont have the Pattern# 1 Diffractor of Clemens. Mine are 42,59,80. At one time I had 3 of Dunwoody 36 pat# 63. Odd in that I have only two Dunwoody patterns 63 and 77. I have not made a dent in my final 14 Diffractors for set # 2 in 9 months. The most diffractors of any one player I have are 13 of Richard Hidalgo followed by 10 of Mark Kotsay. Too hard to find them anymore but I dont think I will ever finish my third diffractor set for along time. Its hard enough to find any of the regular pattern# 1s and same Card#/Pattern#s 98 TEKs that I have several seprate complete sets of and two or three partials as well. Wonder how many of each regular cards there are. Wonder why Topps wont release that information?

That one's easy. 23x. Where x is the number of diffractor patterns for each player. Since my guess was a minimum of 10 diffractor patterns for each player, that's a minimum of 230 base cards for each pattern -- again assuming even distribution. If you're stumped by the 23x, ask a fifth grader.

Thanks for the trade, Rich! I thought for sure I was 1/3 of the way to a set, but I only have 25 different now. At least I have a bunch of the big cards out of the way (Griffey, Jeter, Gwynn, Maddux, Frank, Juan) but I still need a Ripken and McGwire.

Might have 1 pattern incoming ;)

Would leave me with only three patterns to go!

I always imagine you having that wicked Belle scowl on your face when you search for the final few cards to complete your set. Deep creases in your forehead, and a strong look of serious on your face. lol

Pattern 81 was the last one I needed to complete my first O'neill set after 14 years. After I finally got pattern 81 two more 81s came my way via lots and also a bin just popped up. For 14 years nothing then 4 of them come out of the woodwork. 3 more patterns to go for my second base set. Then the next 25 years to finish the diffractors.

HAha that's funny. It's weird how things like that happen. I'm not doing another Tek set, so not paying attention to other patterns which come up but I'm sure I'd be close to a second set if I did.
