The 1998 Topps Tek Thread

A base Tek Griffey listed as a diffractor.

Every once in a while I puzzle over an eBay lot that I lost out on, wondering exactly what I missed. So fwiw I'll satisfy the curiosity of any of the bidders or onlookers about the '98 Tek set minus the Frank Thomas card that was up for bid over the weekend and sold a few days ago. Could see that a few collectors on the board bid on that item. I figured someone had bought a box and added a few misc cards to come up with the near set. But I could see for sure about 3 diffractors in the barely fanned out lot. Thought there might be another 1 or 2. Pretty obvious that several other bidders saw the same thing. Maybe they saw more than I did. Opened the lot today. There were 89 different cards as advertised. 12 of them were diffractors! 5 were duplicates for me, 7 were new ones. No superstars, but of the 7 new ones for me there were Sheffield, Burks, Mussina, Bagwell, and Galarraga diffractors along with a Karros and a Hinch. Got an extra Matt Williams one too.

Went through the base cards for patterns people are looking for. None from Don Apland's want list, but found a couple from the want lists that have been posted on this and the prior page, and lists that I have in a binder. Would encourage folks that are down to a manageable number of patterns missing to periodically post what they need.

I've bought some of the new Tek. Not as fun as chasing my guy's 90s stuff.

Would you buy it if they made it almost identical to 98 and started with pattern 91? 20 year anniversary type stuff...
