While I disagree with his ranking, I do understand why he did it.

We all know what Maybin is capable of, Stanton has wicked power, Morrison is an up-and-comer (and is Callis' latest mancrush), Skipworth has great skills, Dominguez can hit and play the hot corner, etc.

However, if this system were based solely on its pitching, no way would it rank anywhere near where it does.

look at the top 5 hitting prospects on the Marlins....

Maybin
Stanton
Morrison
Dominguez
Skipworth

compare to

Aaron Cunningham
Cardenas
Chris Carter
Jemile weeks

The A's can't compete with that... Not even close. I wouldn't take a single athletic over any of the marlins on that list.

A true impact bat is the most sought after trait by EVERY major league team. Makes sense to me

Agreed, but any scouting director out there would rather have 6 STUD position prospects than 6 stud pitching prospects.

I love pitchers, you know that, I was one, but give me the marlins over the A's in a heart beat....

I completely agree about the top 6 hitters with Florida being better than Oakland, however the Oakland pitching prospects are truly top tier. And I pitchers are tougher to get than hitters. Teams can win with amazing pitching and lackluster batting, yet few if any teams have proven that you can win with amazing offense and lackluster pitching...Texas anyone?

Now, one thing I find interesting...we're here debating Florida versus Oakland, yet it's Texas who gets the nod for #1. And no one is mentioning Texas.

Cause there is another thread talking about texas....

Yeah, you win with pitching, BUT, a True stud bat is harder to find and a higher %% chance to succeed. How many stud pitching prospects actually make it??? Call Eddie Bane in L.A. and ask him if he can have one prospect with one tool, what would it be? A power bat is the answer....

I think the % chance of hitters succeeding is what's driving the Marlins over the A's. If we knew that all the A's pitching prospects would pan out I think they would rank higher. But they are going with history and betting that as good as they might look now, we're probably not going to see them all pan out. Where as, more than 1 hitter probably will be at least an everyday player.

Not after I heard them slobbering about Stanton in their podcast. They were all over the Marlins' hitting prospects.

Well, this fits the order that Callis puts them in in his article in the new issue, so I guess I can tell you the top and bottom five.

Top

1 - Rangers
2 - Marlins
3 - A's
4 - Rays
5 - Giants

Bottom(not sure if this is ascending or descending order)

Astros
Padres
Tigers
Cubs
Diamondbacks

Sadly, I have to agree with the Cubs, but happily, I have to say that Callis and I share a similar man crush.

I know Marlins have many strong bats, but to me, if you are going to be named the second best farm system, you better have 1-3 really strong pitchers (so a mix of strong bats and pitchers).

I think Braves are the strongest, most balanced team behind the rangers.

(heyward, Freeman are obviously dominant bats, where as tommy hanson and zeke are the dominant pitchers)

Like I said, rangers are the most stacked.

Zeke isn't dominant

Pitching is kinda weak behind Hanson with Julio Trehan being next on the list.

Wes Hodges does not get much love in scouts circles.

very true. hodges still has alot of work to do, and laporta isnt as good as people think. was horrible after the trade last season. most of the better talent is double a and lower. maybe next year. but the rangers are stacked, thats pretty cool.

no, he is very good also. the indians have some good 3b prospects. wonder who will stay and who will end moving, hodges or mills.
