My collection would be 1/10th what it is without DLP & eBay.

I still have 3 brick & mortar stores near me. PC cards I have found at them in 2 years? 1

Pretty simple in my mind. This:

In my opinion, completely redefined the RC brand, made BC king of the rookie cards, which ultimately led to the demise of the "RC" designation of old, and in part played a small role in the bankruptcy of Fleer, and the shutting down of Donruss' baseball business. All other baseball companies have been trying to compete with Topps ever since, with exclusive contracts, non eligible players (ie Pete Rose, Joe Jackson etc) and the like, to no avail.

Ok, I might be overstating things, but that one card did revolutionize the hobby this past decade. Hands down no other card, or card release, had a bigger impact than the Pujols BC RC. Please feel free to discuss.

I understand loving Donruss. I'm a huge dufex fan. I just couldn't take it anymore and I was personally happy to see them axed. I fully get others thinking I'm nuts for that.

The 1/1's and sticker autographs got out of hand, but I liked their product. What I don't like is a MLB license monopoly...

That is pretty much the main factors that made me dislike Donruss. Endless parallels that were exactly the same except for numbering. 400 new cards for my player but only 5 different designs. Then Bob Feller on a sticker, like they couldn't just mail them to him and have them all hand signed for next to nothing.

BLAH.

But I'm also not a fan of monopolies. I wish they'd let there be multiple companies but restrict how many sets can be released.

The Best thing is that the hobby got so out of control with parallels and autographs, that all the great cards from the 1980s and 1990s can now be purchased at extremely low prices. Understandably, they are now "worth" less because of this. It's a collector's dream.

For example : a 1983 Topps Set for $30, 1989 Upper deck factory set $45, etc.

Best thing - The Topps Retro sets. 2002 Topps Heritage is the set that got me back into collecting after being out of the hobby for about 8 years.

Worst Thing - Redemptions that don't even get printed until years after the product is released.

Worst thing, the introduction of autographed rookie cards to the hobby. Seems that unless it's autographed it's kinda worthless, unless it's a refractor parallel.

That happened in the 90's. ;)

*Went back and read the entire thread.
TOPNOTCHSY beat me to it.

I agree with a previous post regarding ebay being the BIGGEST thing to happen to the hobby this past decade, and all the card shops that closed because of it. The WORST thing has been the rise in pack prices and vast number of products which have all but rid the hobby of kids being able to spend their allowances on cards for the shear joy of collecting. The BEST thing to me is the chrome auto rookie card when there is not a card from the previous year.

Justin

the chrome auto rookie is part of the reason why the 99 cent packs for kids went bye bye
the chrome auto rookie is part of the reason why packs exceeded $3 each
Sorry, but '93 Finest & '94 Flair gets the credit for that.
