Pretty interesting Article from CNNsi about the biggest trades the Flames have done in their history, ever since they arrived in Calgary Via Atlanta circa 1980. Article was printed well befor the4 Dion Phaneuf trade, she isn't on the list.

Here's the article.....

sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/news/2001/08/08/sayitaintso_flames/#gilmour

And now that these trades are long over and most, if not all players have been retired, who do u think won each of the trades overall? Obviously you will seen which one went on to have a better career, but that is not the only thing you have to put into consideration, You gotta also think about Stanley Cups that team won, after the trade. Since the Stanley Cup is the ultimate goal, a Stanley Cup win or wins rank, very, very high on things i take into consideration for this question.

For Example, a trade takes place between a young sniper and an All Star defensive defensemen. Young Sniper countinues to improve year after year, and next thing you know he is scoring 40, 50, 60 goals a year, hes a perennial All Star every year and ranks very high between the leagues top players many years, Eventually the player gets full superstar status and he NEVER wins the Stanley Cup for the team that traded for him. Never even makes it too conference finals either. The other player goes along quietly and does what he does best and that is being one of the very best defensive players in the league. Gets an all star game invitation and his first full year his team wins the Stanley cup and he plays a big part in it. Oh yeah this team got another player in the deal as well. They also gotta a well-known back up goalie in this same deal who played in the 30 game range every year and once on the bench and played a few games in this teams playoff drive in winning the CuP. Me personally? Im taking the team that won the Stanley Cup :D

So who WON these trades???

February 28, 1999
Flames trade RW Theo Fleury and LW Chris Dingman to Colorado for RW Rene Corbet, D Wade Belak, RW Robyn Regehr and C Jarrett Stoll

January 2, 1992
Flames trade F Doug Gilmour, D Jamie Macoun,
F Ric Nattress, LW Kent Manderville and
G Rick Wamsley to Toronto for RW Gary Leeman,
D Alexander Godynyuk, G Jeff Reese, D Michel Petit and LW Craig Berube

August 25, 1997
Flames trade LW Gary Roberts and G Trevor Kidd to Carolina for RW Andrew Cassels and G Jean-Sebastien Giguere

March 7, 1988
Flames trade RW Brett Hull and F Steve Bozek to St. Louis for G Rick Wamsley and D Rob Ramage

June 16, 1990
Flames trade RW Joe Mullen to Pittsburgh
for D Nicolas Perreault

December 19, 1995
Flames trade RW Joe Nieuwendyk to Dallas
for C Corey Millen and RW Jarome Iginla

I will also toss in the Dion Phaneuf trade, its still early to say who has won it in the long term, but we can still say who has won it those far, since this was a HUGE Flames and it was a HUGE trade for the Leafs many compared it to and still are comparing it to the Flames/Leafs, INFAMOUS Gilmour trade, which is sill the NHL's largest trade to date (10 Players got traded that day. Not prospects or draft-picks, 10 ROSTER players, that is HUGE, haha) as Toronto took off after the Gilmour trade and they have taken off with the Phaneuf so far this year as well and Phaneuf is playing like an absolute BEAST so far this year and has 11 points in 14 games and is tied for fourth place for overall NHL defenceman scoring. Hes also is a +5 and that +5 ranks Phaneuf very high among the NHL's +/- leaders. Overall leader is a +10 and that is (WOW) TYLER SEGUIN of the Bruins!!!! The defenmen leader has a +8 and that +8 is shared by three players, Andrej Sekera of Buffalo, Ryan Wilson of Colarado and Sheldon Souray of Dallas, who BTW is having a spectacular comeback to his NHL career after sitting out 1-2 years and playing in the AHL . Anyone know long Surray was out of NHL for?

January 31st 2010

The Calgary Flames have traded defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and prospect defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Sorry about this last post taking so long, my laptop overheated and it shot down. Took awhile to cool down.

If u wanna answer the question of what team won what trade, just
my trade page and put your answer below each trade. I though this could be a fun and debatable topic if we get enough paticipation! So answer away... :D

Flames win this one in a landslide. Not even close.

January 2, 1992
Flames trade F Doug Gilmour, D Jamie Macoun,
F Ric Nattress, LW Kent Manderville and
G Rick Wamsley to Toronto for RW Gary Leeman,
D Alexander Godynyuk, G Jeff Reese, D Michel Petit and LW Craig Berube

Another LANDSLIDE win, this rime by Toronto

August 25, 1997
Flames trade LW Gary Roberts and G Trevor Kidd to Carolina for RW Andrew Cassels and G Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Easily Carolina. Had Giguere stock around Calgary a little bit longer, the results woulkd have been way different.

March 7, 1988
Flames trade RW Brett Hull and F Steve Bozek to St. Louis for G Rick Wamsley and D Rob Ramage

Call me crazy, but Calgary wins this trade, it was very, very close to being a draw though)

June 16, 1990
Flames trade RW Joe Mullen to Pittsburgh
for D Nicolas Perreault

Easily Pittsburgh. After wining a Cup in Calgary in 1989, i believe Mullen went on to win 2 Cups (or was it 1?) in Pittsburgh. Winning his first Cup with the Pens in his first year with the team and i believe he get his second cup in his second year with the Pens! As for Nicolas Perreault..... Who The F@ck is Nickalos Perreault?? Hahaha!

December 19, 1995
Flames trade RW Joe Nieuwendyk to Dallas
for C Corey Millen and RW Jarome Iginla

Im calling this one a draw, even though there are still many Stars fans that wish this deal had never happened. The way i see it, this trade was just colossal for both teams in what each of these players did for their new teams. Joe Nieuwendyk just went out and won Dallas their first ever Stanley Cup and also took home the Conn Smythe (Hockeys best individual award imo) as Playoff MVP. He had a few more good years in Dallas, playing in his HOF career. He Later becomes the team's GM once hes retired.

What did Iginla do? JUst became an absolute Icon in Calgary and the greatest Flame to ever play. Took over all the best all-time teams records like Most Goals in a career, most points in a career and most games played in a career. Through out the NHL Iginla was considered a true NHL SuperStar, especially from 2000-2007. There was also about a 2-3 year period there, where many NHL experts and analysts considered Iginla as the very best player in the world. Iginla also won almost all of the very best individual awards a player can win. The Maurice Richard trophy for "Most Goals", Iggy wins it twice, Iggy won an Art Ross trophy (most points), Lester B. Pearson winner, MVP as voted by your peers. That same year many peeps thought Iggy also deserved the Hart Trophy (MVP voted on by media), but he game in 2nd place by 1 vote, the closest Hart race ever. It was later found out that one Media member didn't even vote Iggy in the top 3 (all others did) and had he even voted him 3rd, Iggy would have won the Hart. He has also one the King Clancy Trophy and the Mark Messier award for best leader in 2009. While Iggy has not won the Flames a Stanley Cup yet, he did take this close to a Cup Victory. Iggy lead the Flames all the way to game 7 of the 2004 Finals. Also as a member of Team Canada, Iggy has played huges roles in leading Canada to 2 Olympic Golds. Another big thing that evens this trade out as well? Iggy is still playing and one day Calgary will end up getting a younger top prospect for him still.

Unfortunately right now, Toronto is kicking Calgary's butts in this trade bad. I know Phaneuf has a big contract, but he has really picked up his play this year to the old Dion. Lets not forget Dion is still pretty young, hes only 25 or 26 so far and is still learning and still hasn't reached his true potential and is just barley starting to play in his prime

Really Hated the Dion trade then and hate it even more now

I think the Leafs won both of their trades with the Flames. They basically traded for guys who will be team captains for at least 10 years combined, and that doesn't happen every day.

I loved Stajan and White with the Leafs, but I really thought they would have had more of an impact once they moved.

Calgary won this trade. Theo was never the same after he left Calgary and the 4 players the Flames received had solid careers.

January 2, 1992
Flames trade F Doug Gilmour, D Jamie Macoun,
F Ric Nattress, LW Kent Manderville and
G Rick Wamsley to Toronto for RW Gary Leeman,
D Alexander Godynyuk, G Jeff Reese, D Michel Petit and LW Craig Berube

Toronto Gilmour went on to be one of the best players in recent Leafs history.

August 25, 1997
Flames trade LW Gary Roberts and G Trevor Kidd to Carolina for RW Andrew Cassels and G Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Carolina any team that gets Gary Roberts in a trade automatically wins that trade.

March 7, 1988
Flames trade RW Brett Hull and F Steve Bozek to St. Louis for G Rick Wamsley and D Rob Ramage

St Louis I will call you crazy Bilko  Hull went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Blues. the Flames did win the Stanley Cup the following season with Wamsley and Ramage but I am not sure how much those two really contributed.

June 16, 1990
Flames trade RW Joe Mullen to Pittsburgh
for D Nicolas Perreault

PITTSBURGH Mullen helped the Penguins win 2 Stanley Cups and played for the Pens for 6 seasons. he averaged 25 goals and 54 points per season with the Pens.

December 19, 1995
Flames trade RW Joe Nieuwendyk to Dallas
for C Corey Millen and RW Jarome Iginla

Calgary I don't really think anything more needs to be said it's Jarome Iginla.

Toronto Phaneuf had a rough start in Toronto but has turned into a great leader of the Leafs.

Great Analysis on the trades, Dave! I agree with them all except the Hull trade and the only reason i picked Calgary was because they won the Cup and St. Louis never did. Ramage played a big role in Calgary's Cup win, getting 12 points in 20 games and more importantly played some great shut down defense. This trade was one of those trades that really helped out both clubs. It helped Calgary win a Stanley Cup and it gave the Blues one of the best players of ALL-TIME!!

Trish, i agree Toronto hosed Calgary on both deals. Dion is really playing great this year and i still like him a lot and hope he continues playing great.

I didn't realize Ramage played that big of a rule during the 1989 Playoffs but I still have to give the Blues a slight edge in that trade.

One of the interesting things I like to see is how trades affect teams TODAY. For example, the Fleury trade, while done in 1999, is still benefiting Calgary today. Regehr was part of the Fleury trade and just last year brought in Butler in a trade.

I haven't had a chance to look at all the trades, but thought that was interesting.

Though one of the most interesting hockey-related I ever found was that the Penguins drafted Mark Recchi in 1988, and traded him to Philly in 1992. That trade is STILL working for the Penguins as they have a somewhat important guy on their team today that can be directly traced back to the Recchi trade ... Marc-Andre Fleury!

I believe it stemmed from (the major names involved):

Recchi --> Tocchet --> Robitaille --> Zubov --> Samuelsson --> Draft Pick (Fleury)

Thats very neat. Pittsburgh traded up with Carolina to draft Fleury #1, i often forget that!
