That is a joke and contracts like that only hurt fans when it comes to ticket prices. Sooner or later teams will have to make contracts solely based on players performance on a monthly basis. Otherwise a majority of fans will not afford to attend games. Giving someone 6 million a year for being a below avg player is a joke, 111 strike outs is a joke. Tony Gwynn struck out around 400 times in his career..

What about the Cubs giving 10 mil to Carlos Pena? Dude hit .196, 28, 84 and 158 Ks last year.

The money in baseball right now is stupid and cannot be sustained.

Scott Boras isn't the worst man in baseball, he's the smartest! GM's are too dumb to let him and his clients get away with this repeatedly.

i cant beleive people are suggesting Werth screwed up and that he jumped the gun by signing that contract. the idea that somehow the phillies would sign lee and werth to huge contracts is silly. if werth wanted to come back after the contract lee signed he would have had to take maybe 1/7th of what he got. the phillies have 0 money left, so to suggest he could have come back after lee is implausible.

The NHL will go under before MLB will, 60 bucks in Philly gets you behind a column. They almost had to axe teams like the MLB did with the Expos. 300 bucks for two people to attend an NHL game with not even close to the ice seats, hotdogs, soda and parking. You can sit in a bar and eat like royalty and watch on tv and still have money left. Pena's contract makes no sense and why teams offer this money is laughable. Werth did not deserve the contract he recieved, Ryan Howard is not even worth his also. Arod will be a DH in the next two seasons and will make 30 million to be one. Some seats too a Saturday game for the Yankees is 2500 bucks, You can take a family of four to Disney for 4-5 days and feed them for that. Next 10 years all contracts will be performance based as owners will have no choice, It will better the game and players. Fans will actually watch a player perform over taking it easy.

San Francisco offered a one year, $1 million contract to the 2010 World Series MVP.

"To play for a million dollars, I'd rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family," he said. "Thank God I'm well off financially and my money is well invested."
