I vaguely remember it, but didn't Topps do something in 1991 or 1992 where you could find a redemption for the 1952 Topps Mantle in packs? Does anyone else remember that and I wonder if anyone won?

I remember reading about that. I think the winner ended up selling the card because he couldn't afford the taxes that he needed to pay on it.

That's how I remember it too.

I think it was '91 for the 40th Anniversary promo.

And this happened a lot for the '99 UD promo with the Halper Collection GU jerseys.

Combined with the Campy auction around the same timeframe, it Really pushed Hunt Auctions into the spotlight too...

These auction places make way too much money. Plus, they charge a seller's premium also. Nothing but crooks to me.

Heritage Auction has a full-page ad in today's New York Times for this auction. Heritage is estimating a closing bid on this card at $10 million.

Not to knock what is undeniably a great card, but maybe the centering on the back played a role. Contrary to Rosen's letter, which generously states that "The reverse is also perfectly centered," a pixel count suggests that the l/r centering is approximately 68/32 (i.e., 20 pixels on the left, 42 on the right). The back also looks ever-so-slightly tilted. Not bad, but not 50/50.

Fair callout. And I might take any grading company seriously if they had to report the flaws, on a report, on any card graded a 7.5 or higher and not a 10. If you can show that, so could they and its objective. Until they do, they're just hucksters in my book.
