Just took our bottles and cans in, made back $23 (of my own money since we pay deposit)

Soda free loan.....errrrrr taxes.

The land of taxes, we also pay an environmental levy on the cans, as well as deposit. So on every can has a 10¢ deposit and a 1¢ or 3¢ non refundable levy. Its 25¢ and 5¢ for anything over 1L

Oh ya, I forgot I pay 5% federal tax on those drinks which includes the deposit and levy (I'm pretty sure)
