If done right, it can work.

Get rid of the word Cavaliers on the bottom and I think you're good.

A lot of players asses.

That's what I was thinking. 2010-11 Upper Deck From Behind.

Ask them if they believe that the recent adoption of the panini as an acceptable bread/roll here in the US will help their name recognition.

Ask them what in the wide, wide world of Disney is with their logo supposed to be.

Ask them if every card will be a sticker.

Ask them if we can expect a combo swatch of Harry Potter and Dwight Howard.

Does Topps/UD retain their exclusive contracts with their players (Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, MJ, KG etc...)? If so, how successful can a product be without autos and jerseys of all of these players?

Basketball seems to favor the high end rookie cards, but Panini isn't known for high end. Will we see Panini copying the same types of sets that have been successful for UD and Topps or will new ideas be introduced?

I wish we had a bigger basketball following. I'd really like to see the reaction to this compared to what Razor did. Over at beckett it was like the sky was falling when the Beckham deal was announced. All Razor did was take 40 players away from other companies, but Panini has basically killed two companies.

Wow, this is shocking news that I never expected. Someone made a sweetheart deal.....Topps and UD are are just falling behind the curve in every aspect of sportscards. UD especially as thie rproducts are the best, they will be hurt by this news, Exquisite with airbrushing...yikes..!!

In thinks I would never think could happen, Panini being granted an exclusive NBA contract is actually pretty high on the list. I mean, what the hell?

Here are the questions I asked the NBA Panini PR rep

What can collectors expect from your high end products? In the past products like UD exquisite has drawn much praise from the international basketball card market, and has been regarded as the best product in basketball cards over the years. Will Panini produce similar game used patch as we have seen on the market in the past 7 or so years?

Does Topps/UD retain their exclusive contracts with their players (Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, MJ, KG etc...)? If so, how successful can a product be without autos and jerseys of all of these players?

Will the autographs be signed directly on the card, or will you use sticker based autographs?

What is your stance on redemption cards?

Will you use your current company name to market products in the US, or will you switch to a more US friendly marketing strategy?

I will post the responses when they are answered.

That's a very good question, and kind of ties back to my question about high end cards. Hearing the name Panini doesn't bring "high end," "quality" or "value" to mind in terms of cards.

They did not kill two companies

Upper Deck and Tops will survive and I beleive they will come out with non licensed products. Also Upper Deck and Topps may use their player contracts to include basketball players in baseball products. I don't care how much you do not like basketball, Anyone would be happy pulling a Jordan or Lebron auto

Those who collect rookie cards probably will focus on Panini as they will be the only licensed rookie card. If Bowman Chrome or SPX were to come out non licensed I am sure they would still hvae a great following

No matter what happens I will continue to collect the last two rookie classes, and will check out Panini

Yea, Topps and UD can stick around but this hurts a ton. Of course they still have the big pulls (Lebron, MJ, Kobe) but for superstars and the kind of money it costs to get an auto card of theirs, I don't want a crappy looking airbrushed photo.
