This is simply amazing and shows how complacent Topps and UD have become. Hopefully this kick in the pants will get them going and the big two will start to take better care of their customers.

The depressing thing is seeing an offshore company win this contract with the NBA.

Not surprising an offshore company won the contract. NBA has been pushing overseas for a while. They probably feel this will generate more European interest in the game.

I think it is a great idea

Questions for Panini, will they have sticker on sticker autos?

This seems like a ridiculous deal for U.S. collectors, but I'm sure Panini will be successful outside the U.S. I just don't know if collectors here will accept them. They might be producing good quality cards for soccer and what not in Europe, but the only thing I've ever seen from them are stickers. They will have a lot of doubters to win over.

That's what I was thinking. 2010-11 Upper Deck From Behind.

Couldn't that have been the name of about three quarters of UD's products over the last five years or so? ;)

Here are the questions I asked the NBA Panini PR rep

Does Topps/UD retain their exclusive contracts with their players (Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, MJ, KG etc...)? If so, how successful can a product be without autos and jerseys of all of these players?

Not sure why you asked this question. Those contracts are exclusives and have been for some time, they are likely the same contracts that razor has with their player if not even more iron clad. NBA can't void those.

I think we will see UD/Topps go the unlicensed route or work with this company. However unlike Razor, Topps and UD are established brands and most people will still lineup to purchase.

I hate the leagues trying to force people what to buy. Why not give a license to multiple companies and whichever is best for the league and it's customers get's to keep it in the long run?
I've been buying and selling Jordan autos for the last few months since I think they are pretty cheap right now...looks like I may turn up the buying since we won't see many more Jordan autos in a legitimate Bulls uniform.
And if it somehow affects Exquisite down the road, I (and my bottom line) will not be happy.

You know the last shoe is soon to drop. There is no way the NFL doesn't do it now too. If I were Donruss I'd be jumping all over it right now.

My future prediction:

Baseball - Topps/UD
Hockey- UD
Basketball - Panini
Football - Donruss

It was my question to see what they would do without these. Topps and UD each had their exclusives, but to take out the pool of both company's exclusives would be terrible for a new set. I think the answer is interesting knowing that they are going to work out licensing with UD and Topps to use these players.

Im sure theirs players group stuff, where base cards likely will be allowed and even Jerseys, I think UD has the exclusives for their autographs though. IIRC, Topps put Kobe jerseys, but no autos because UD has him as a exclusive. You can always just do as someone else mentioned, sell autos of the players to the other companies, but the contracts might prohibit that.

Do they have an office currently in the US for redemptions or other needs of the customer?

I wonder if the Players had anything in the form of their contracts prohibiting this. I can see Jordan prohibiting this, maybe Kobe too. Not sure on the others. Either way I think this is bad for the NBA, in a card market that is already struggling, I guess it can't get any worse can it?
