There's threads like this all over the baseball forums, so I'm bringing the setup here for the Dallas Cowboys.

The big news today? LB Greg Ellis is now officially cut. I'll miss him, but I can't complain about the cut. He's been unhappy for a while now, and we have like 50 other young LBs on the team.

Ellis' 11-year Cowboys career officially over after he's released by team

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys released Greg Ellis on Tuesday, ending the linebacker's tenure in Dallas after 11 seasons and the eighth-most sacks in team history.

The announcement was no surprise. One week before, team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were planning to cut Ellis if he couldn't be traded.

The Cowboys bypassed wide receiver Randy Moss to take Ellis with the eighth overall pick in the 1998 draft. Ellis had 77 sacks and 634 tackles in 162 games and led Dallas in sacks six times.

Ellis was a defensive end for most of that time, then moved to linebacker when former coach Bill Parcells changed to a 3-4 defense. Ellis grumbled at first, then tore his Achilles' tendon. He returned in 2007 and had his best season with 12.5 sacks in 13 games, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

This was definitely coming...

Jones even admitted after the draft they had shopped him around, but no real interest. The one worry is that he would fit perfect in Philly, who needs a pass-rushing specialist.

We'll see. I don't relally like letting someone still pretty productive go for nothing just 'cuz he MIGHT make trouble later. GM Jerry kinda back himself into this though.

On a serious note.

The cowboys are damn smart doing this while they can. Greg Ellis is on his way down because of his age. He's been there 10 years. I think Anthony Spencer will do fine.

I do agree with that, but it's always hard (usually) to say goodbye to a guy you've been rooting for for that many years. He's been a Cowboy for almost half of my life (I'm 22).

Also, I resent your graphic images  ;)

The One and Only Steelers Super Colector!
the GF misty follows the Cowboys
From our chatting on them we both agree Jones is the problem in Big D
I hope they can find that #1 WR - Roy Williams will now have to step it up
I was really impress with Choice lst season in the Game at Pittsburgh last year.
The D has Ware who is just a BEAST! But the need help in the secondary
Shall see what they are planning soon!

Ummm Football starts when ?

I agree that Jones is the problem. He needs to take a backseat when it comes to personnel management. He's a marketing genius, but can kill a team quick.

Football doesn't start soon enough!

Ryo, Post thanked!

Love 'em or hate 'em (mostly hate) the Cowboys are a lightening rod. Hopefully by dumping TO they can focus a little better on football, and not give the haters so much ammo.

Jerry's new Palace opens tomorrow nite with a big country singer concert. Should be cool to see some finished pics. But I heard all the new roads aren't done yet, so traffic for the first couple of events will be pretty rough.

Here's an interview with DeMarcus about that whole Ellis/Hiding thing:

Still don't know what to make of it all, but it sure sucks that Ellis would bring it up at all on his way out town.
Saw that a little earlier today. I don't really care what Ellis has to say at this point. He's been whining for what, like 2 seasons now?

i must say i dont see the cowboys doing much next year, as a lions fan i have watched years of roy williams not giving 100 percent on the field which wont change even with the star on his helmet, marion barber looked to have been hit by the injury bug last year which will kill them if that happens this year, and finally romo....oh romo, lol i really want the guy to do good but he just doesnt have it

Couldn't agree more with what you said about Williams.

If Marion Barber would go down, I'm not worried. Between a healthy Tashard Choice and Felix Jones, we'll be just fine. I really want Choice to see snaps, but they'll probably put him on the back burner unless injury occurs.

Romo...I don't even know. He's definitely got talent. He just has to get over the hump. Peyton Manning took how many seasons to win a playoff game? I'm not trying to say Romo is as good as Peyton, but I'm going to give him a season or two more before I totally dump on the guy.

He is only going into his 3rd full season, and has put up some impressive numbers. Had he not been injured last year, the Cowboys would have been in the Playoff (this is assuming that he won a game of the 4 Brad Johnson lost).

Only time will tell...

I've always a big BJ fan.

Even had him on my fantasy teams a couple of times back in the day. But...

He single-handedly cost us 2 games and would've have probably won 1 of the other 2. That Rams game was just HORRIBLE! IMO, that was the worst loss of year, even worse than Steelers, Ravens or road Iggles game. I'm still mad thinking about it. The Pokes definitely under-achieved, had some poorly-timed injuries, but with 2 (or 3) more wins, and they were close to them, this whole discussion is moot. I'm cautiously optimistic for 2009.
