the Panthers have traded the rights to unrestricted free agent Jay Bouwmeester to the Flames for d-man Jordan Leopold. they must sign him before the July 1st free agency period begins.

can they sign him?

I don't think the Flames would trade away Leopold if they didn't think they could sign Bouwmeester.

Yeah, I think they will sign him. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe both Iginla and Phaneuf are locked up to long term deals. I would think they should have the money to sign him.

I guess this was done for the Flames to get a few extra days in to try and sign JayBo before the other teams can talk to him. JayBo is also building a house in Calgary and his GF/Fiance is from Calgary as well, so maybe he will take a "hometown" discount to play in Calgary. Phaneuf + JayBo + Regehr together would be scary.

Yeah, he basically said he'll sign there if sent. The Flyers wanted him BAAAAD, but couldn't get a guarantee he would sign. No reason the Flames shouldn't compete for the Cup for years now.

Also, Leopold is probably stuck in Florida. He could sign somewhere else, but the Panthers can pretty much match any offer.

Great trade for Calgary, bad for the rest of the West.

Calgary gets a steal as people have already eluded to the fact that he is almost a lock to sign there. I am a bit worried about the Flames lack of offense though. On the other hand, it is going to be tough to get 3 goals against this team. Kipprusoff could have a Vezina type season.
