I've been wanting to try and put together the '48-'49 Leaf set for a while in a very low grade, "well-loved" condition, but just haven't been able to find beaters for the right price, and I'm kind of weary of buying raw off of Ebay. But I think I got a good deal on this lot today at a local show, and it gives me a good starting point with the set.

(The scan cut off some borders on the left side and the top.) Paid $30 for the Doerr, and $55 total for the other 11.

They go along well with my original Leaf pickup that I made a few months back:

Really excited to start making some progress with the commons in this set. I'll probably wait until the end to pick up the heavy hitters.

Thinking that I'll eventually get them all slabbed. Probably SGC just because I think they will look nice on the black background and it should make the colors pop.

I'm going to be using this thread to update my progress, so check back every once in a while if you're interested. And if anybody has any out there that they're looking to move, shoot me a PM.

Thanks for reading!

Definitely a GREAT set to collect. I'd recommend going to shows and picking up commons to fill those spots, you'll be able to see the card in person and tell whether or not it is legitimate, and be able to haggle, etc.

Best of luck

I love that set. For many years, until the late 80s, the set was very unpopular and considered ugly. (Well, it is ugly, but its simple charm makes it attractive now.)

But the rarity and incredible checklist (Ruth, Wagner, DiMaggio, first mainstream Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige rookie) and scarce shortprints, made it become a vintage collectors' favorite.

Good luck building the set. I hope you have deep pockets and lots of patience.

Got this one in today. Slowly trying to knock out some of the commons before I start tackling the big boys (which is going to suck and take me forever haha)
