Next person that discusses something other than the topic of this thread is going to get a time out from me. This includes discussing other members. If you have fully developed your argument in this thread, it is probably time to let it stand rather than belabor your same points repeatedly.

Guess I kicked over a hornet's nest, huh?

I apologize for my quite personal post. I realize it is an example of what isn't needed here. However, for sct to scream that I am some sort of cancer here or on CU is laughable. Those who pay an ounce of attention know that I normally post about boring stuff like vintage, my Butler collection, my Dodgers collection, 90's inserts and other random crapola. And yes, sometimes I take a jab at sct. Can't help my damn self. To suggest that I stalk threads he's in is laughable, though - dude has damn near 7500 posts, while I have somewhere around 2500 - again, mostly about stuff only a few care about.

And Gwynn545, I highly doubt I'm high on Gilmo's friends list or even his radar. We've rarely communicated. It's nice to know I'm a respected member, though. :)

Heh. He said, "member".

Okay, rather than stay up all night trying to get people to behave, I am going to lock the thread and will unlock it in the morning.

For what it is worth:

Just because someone doesn't mind reading "dramatic" threads off topic due to people bashing one another doesn't mean it is right. Just because someone doesn't mind what someone else says about them doesn't mean it is right. What is important is that EVERYONE should have the chance to feel comfortable in a thread/forum/this whole board, and if they do not they should be use the tools the board has to offer by either reaching out to a Mod if they feel something or someone is doing something wrong or simply report a post. This does not mean every member involved will have action taken against them, but it does mean that they will at least be listened to and if a trend of a user is proven to be either harassing or trolling it simply is right to moderate that person in a structured and professional manner.

What I have gathered from the majority of posts in this thread so far is that many of us are trying to micro-manage each others posts to see what is fair or unfair. The fact that this threads topic around tighter moderation certainly opens the gate to any and all perception of what "tighter moderation" stands for on an individual level. This thread is a great example of "freedom" where you can and should speak your opinions. It is also a great example of some that try to speak their opinion, but do so in an attacking fashion towards others whether they mean to or not. In my opinion, certainly in this thread, nobody should be punished for their opinions or feelings. I do however think that many people perceive others in this thread based off of what or how they are posting towards the topic or others coming from the perception they have from knowing each user on this whole forum the whole time it has been here.

I know this answers nothing at all to the good opinions mentioned in this thread. I do think because we have a large discussion around this, the examples being asked for of what tighter moderation looks like, fair or not, will make it easier to see going forward. As an example, and this is by far in no way to call anyone out specifically: If Member A started to quote and troll Member B in other threads based off of dislike of Member B that has nothing to do with the topic at hand, that would be time for a Mod to step in to keep the train on the rail. This board is certainly free all around and more than forgiving. It is also very easy to see when someone chooses to personally disrespect another person due to the trend of ongoing posts. Each moderation is circumstantial and may be handled differently depending on the context of post. It will never be about a dislike of a certain member, it will always be about the trend of said member.

There is a lot of grey area between "right" and "wrong". There should be when we have a great forum where we can all have the ability to express knowledge, expertise, likes, dislikes, opinions and feelings.

http://www.freedomcardboard.com/forum/general-chat/125500-card-shop-pandemic-2.html This is an example of moderators performing their duties and not causing trouble, inciting off topic issues, right?

That thread is a perfect example of tighter moderation being needed all around as a whole. There are many posts being personally bashed onto others, members and mods as well. You are correct if you feel Mods should take the "be the adult" approach and do the right thing by either steering the topic back to what it is about, or reach out via PM to personally discuss things more candidly. It is also correct that people in that thread are disrespecting others regardless of title and going way overboard arguing about each other, not the topic at hand. That thread started as a good conversation with great opinions that ended with personal attacks and who should be banned.

The sky is not falling in FCB folks. Chris is not going to make FCB into BMB 2.0
If you as a member are worried about the tightening of the rules you are worried about one of two things, 1 you wont be allowed to troll or 2 you wont be allowed to be a dick just for being a dick sakes. If neither of these worry you then you will be fine, if they do, then thats who needs to go. Trolling for trolling sake and being a dick for dicks sake is not a good thing.
Now if someone does troll you or is a dick to you and you defend yourself or are a dick back to them whos going to be the on reprimanded? The original troll / dick, not the poster that defended themselves. Everything that Chris and other mods have posted in here seems clear to me.

You really think tighter moderation will get more people to this website?

How about the fact that card collecting is not what it used to be.

How about the fact that there is nothing sexy about baseball card collecting

How about the fact that disposable income is still down compared to the peak of card collecting.

While the forums here are great to shoot the sheet about baseball, sports and all other worldly BS with people here, don't expect any great rush of traffic with tighter moderation. Forums like these are no longer rare but quite common....then add the competition of social media sites. With any forum you will have the minority that like to stir the pot. That doesn't mean the majority of the members should be regulated under tighter restrictions.

With all due respect, what differentiates this from any other forum? What would make someone want to come here that they can't get anywhere else?
