Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
By Mark Polishuk [February 2, 2012 at 5:58pm CST]
The Cubs have signed Cuban left-hander Gerardo Concepcion to a contract, reports Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald (via Twitter).

Concepcion, 18, established residency in Mexico in mid-January and was declared a free agent last week. Several teams were interested in the young southpaw, including the Blue Jays, Giants, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, White Sox and Yankees. Torres recently said Concepcion had received as many as 10 contract offers.

BA's scouting report on him:

Gerardo Concepcion, lhp

Concepcion, 19, was the rookie of the year in Cuba in 2010-11, when he posted a 3.36 ERA in 101 2/3 innings pitching for the Industriales. While his ERA ranked 11th in the league, he averaged just 4.7 strikeouts per nine innings with 53 strikeouts and 43 walks, though he was facing much older competition in Cuba. He defected last June in the Netherlands at the World Port Tournament, though he didn't pitch there.

Concepcion is a slender 6-foot-2 with long arms, sloped shoulders and an athletic, wiry build that could have some projection remaining. He has advanced feel for pitching for his age and has shown the ability to pitch with his fastball to both sides of the plate, though he doesn't have the stuff to miss many bats. At times his fastball ranges from 88-92 mph, though some scouts have said they've seen him dip to 86-90 mph at times.

Concepcion has had success in Cuba by being able to change speeds to keep hitters off balance. Some scouts like Concepcion's mid-70s curveball, which shows good depth at times, but others say it gets loopy. He throws slightly across his body, which provides him with a little deception, but it's a concern for some scouts who think his mechanics hamper his ability to get to the front side of his delivery and show consistency with his breaking ball. Concepcion also throws a changeup (some scouts have called it a splitter), though like many young pitchers it's still a work in progress.

While some scouts view Concepcion's upside as a No. 5 starter, others see a bit more, though with his present stuff it's hard to project more than a back-end starter for now. Concepcion, who became a free agent earlier this month, would likely begin his career at one of the Class A levels.

Don't get too excited, Cubs fans. Just a #5 starter down the road.

Yes, but a big reason for Cespedes to sign with us now

He is 18 years old, and you have all determined he is a #5 starter? Really.

Damn, I just don't get some people, and how they take ONE SENTENCE from a random report and speak it as gospel. Get a damn clue.

He was 18 pitching against 20-25 year olds.

What was Ryan Vogelsong's projected Slot in the rotation? Cliff Lee was a 4-5 for a couple years and even DEMOTED because he just flat out struggled, oh and he throws 88-91, NOT 95-97.

I find it hilarious that people pigeon hole prospects at the age of 18, that you damn well sure have never seen pitch.

OK, let's ask the scouts.

Ben Badler:
International scouts not sure how Concepcion could command $7MM. Finesse lefty, lots of 86-90 on the gun lately.

I find it hilarious people just assume things on a message board and how they assume people don't know much.

International Market is wildly inefficient right now. Jamison Tailln had a 6.5 mil signing bonus. 4 mil for Bundy.

Nice get Cubs.

The draft is significantly different than the draft. As a Cubs fan, adding cheap young talent is what we need to do. An 18 year old lefty who is 86-90 mph works for me.

Hahhaah ::facepalm:: ::facepalm:: ::facepalm::
Talk about your brain thinking on thing and your fingers typing another ::facepalm::

I meant the international free agent market is completely different than the draft.

I would take Jameson Taillon for $6.1 over 2 years of John Grabow. BUT, not everyone has that opportunity, AND the player has limited negotiationg ability.

I didn't think this was worthy of a separate thread, but in other Cubs news:

Cubs, Garza Avoid Arbitration
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 3, 2012 at 8:52am CST]
The Cubs avoided arbitration with Matt Garza, agreeing to a one-year, $9.5MM contract for 2012. Garza's agency, CAA, tweeted the news and noted that the deal includes performance bonuses.

The Cubs had offered $7.95MM and Garza had asked for $12.5MM for a midpoint of $10.225MM. As MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows, the Cubs have agreed to terms on 2012 contracts with all of their arbitration eligible players.

Wow maybe he can just buy another ACLS ring then.
