Makes me sick! I pulled this
ikedavisred.jpg

Turned it last March for $360. At the time I thought that was fantastic, and one closed the next week for $190. It got resold last week at $1000 BIN. I can't imagine what it could go for as a 9.5 at auction.

And THIS is why we prospect.
And Heyward.
And Stanton.
And Jeus Montero.
And the list goes on and on.

If you have the patience, skills (luck is included too) and knowledge, from an investment point of view, Prospecting can be a ball and great for you wallet.

You could have lost your shirt, pants and stained undies on Jason Stokes, Sean Burroughs and Corey Patterson but one guy alone could have made up for ALL of those busts.

Meh, prospecting simply raises the cost of cards for collectors.

I see nothing dumb about insurance that the hobby is somewhat stable and not dying. Pieces of cardboard with autographs could easily be a fraction of existing prices. Be thankful for "dumb" bidders.

+1 good post

My god, what are these people thinking? This is truly ridiculous. I thought it was INSANE when I saw it was at $775 this morning.

Link to Ike Davis Orange Refractor auto - currently at $1250!

WOW is all I can say. And it proves once again, at least in my eyes that there are some VERY dumb people in this hobby.

skrip

I find it no different than people who attempt to rip-off sellers by attempting to purchase something from them at an incredibly low price because the seller does not know what they have, or is not familiar with what they are selling.

THAT is truly ridiculous.

what a joke beckett grading has become, a card with 60/40 centering gets a 9.5? In the old days you would be
lucky to get an 8.5 with that centering.

Um seriously, no thanks. There is more to the hobby than subsidizing the middlemen who may or may not enjoy cards, this includes ebay and paypal.

So in the mean time you are satisfied by being an elitist snob on a message board?

Here's a tip, You don't decide what a real collector is and isn't.

Given your comments, couldn't I also say the same things about you?

If this were true you wouldn't have interjected here and respected my opinion...

No, you can't

I don't give a damn what other people collect or spend their money on. You do.

I get tired of you constantly putting people down for what they chose to do with sports cards.

It's seriously old, and needs to stop.

My apologies to anyone I may have offended, I'll be nicer then.

it isn't about being nice

It's about understanding that this is a hobby where people can do as they chose with the items in it.

I'll return to being nice now :)

You can twist it to say whatever you want. But the fact is that you will quit belittling people for what they collect or you won't be on this site much longer.

Exactly. Personally, I wouldn't spend $2K on a Pujols BC Rookie Auto, but some people are more than willing to do so, and I can understand that. I choose to buy cards of Rick Porcello, a 21 year old pitcher who hasn't even proved that he will definitely be anything more than an average pitcher in the majors. Lots of people wouldn't do that, but I'm happy to do so.

Different things are worth more to different people. If someone is willing to pay a certain amount for whatever card and it makes them happy, how can anyone try to tell them that they are ruining it for others or that it's stupid? Everyone has a different outlook on this hobby and finds their own ways to enjoy it. Even if you don't understand or are angered by someone else's decisions, just try to respect them and let them continue to enjoy the hobby in their own way.

For the record, I've never called anyone stupid or crazy for paying any price for a card unlike tons of other people here. Actually I've always been quite vocal in support for the prices people pay for cards.
