Yankees placed CF Brett Gardner on the disabled list with a broken left thumb.

Gardner broke his thumb sliding into second base yesterday during the first inning. He will be in a cast for two weeks then be evaluated. Gardner was hitting .275/.354/.400 with 20 stolen bases in 200 at-bats. It's a loss for the Yankees, who will go with Melky Cabrera full-time in center. The team plans on bringing up another outfielder in a couple of days, the choices being Austin Jackson, Shelley Duncan or John Rodriguez.

Funny thing is I am still experiencing pain from a broken right thumb from the end of April. Hopefully Gardner can heal up quick, I really enjoy watching him play..

That must of happened when you made that catch in centerfield.

Actually playing basketball ;)

I know everyone will think right away that Shelley Duncan is mashing the ball so that would be the obvious call-up, BUT if the Yankees want someone that can also man CF, A-Jax would be the first choice..

They NEED CF help. And just because they need it doesn't mean Austin gets the call. I say that the bring up Shelly until the 31st. Melky starts until the 31st. The Yanks go out and get an OK better than Melky CF at the deadline. Jackson comes up in September

They don't need CF help. They need RF help- Swisher sucks at fielding and hitting. Melky is a perfectly fine CF (so is Gardner but he doesn't have nearly as good of an arm).

Well they have to deal with Swish. Maybe they will trust that Matsui can go back into LF. And move Damon over to right. Or Matsui in Right, Damon stays in Left. With Swisher as the DH. They probably wouldnt take any chances now that they just lost an OF

They've already said that Matsui is not playing out field. I think they should call up Jackson put him in Center and move Melky to Right. To be honest, I'm sick of Nick Swisher.

I'm sorry to hear Gardner is gonna have to sit out for a while. He'd a gritty player and I am glad to see he has had a pretty decent season so far. I remember at the beginning of the season a lot of Yankee fans on here weren't too happy to have Gardner in the OF it seems now that fans are starting to like him more.
Hopefully he heals quickly and continues to improve.

Melky was killing the ball before he ran into the wall and got injured earlier in the year. He doesn't get enough credit. Kid is clutch and has a cannon for an arm. He should be full a time CF.

I completely agree. I think he and Cano last year would stay out late partying (they are best friends) which is why both vastly underperformed. I think now they have gotten their act together and stopped doing that.

The Riverlands.
During the Yanks broadcast, Michael Kay asked Girardi about this possibility. Joe said it is a definite no that A-Jax is not being called up.

Agree with this, Melky was already getting almost all the playing time to begin with, Gardner is not a big loss even though it is always good to have a player who hustles all the time.

This thread simply looks like someone is looking to cash in on some prospects... yet again... :)

It won't be Jackson. They want him to play every day, which he won't if he's called up. I'm sure it'll be Duncan.
