Starting this up again, what ya got to add?

Back in the 80s, PANINI used to print Topps' baseball and football stickers.

The last 60 cards in the '88 Donruss set were once considered short printed (not joking!)

'85 Topps Traded cards were issued in packs as a test run. And while there is not a single solitary card in this product which has any value, boxes sell for well over $100

The 1988 Donruss SPs were a huge pain to track down; it was the first pack I ever bought, in 1988, but didn't finish the set for a few more years. I was missing the Randall Byers SP, never could pull one or find one.

actually "officially" only 32 sp's in the 1988 donruss set (though i'd contend that there are really 64)....as for the "official" sp's , 13 were a result of base cards being pulled in order to make room for the 26 bonus cards....13 others were the bonus cards whose print runs were shorter than the base cards they replaced...the other 6 were a result if the 6 checklists being printed in two versions (one version renumbered to reflect the addition of the bonus cards) which actually means all 12 checklists are technically shirt prints although the guides generally don''t refer to them as such ....also , if you believe beckett's info , the SP's from 648-660 are less plentiful than the ones from 603-636...as for why i say there are 64 instead of 32 : 26 base cards were printed on on SOME sheets while 26 BC's replaced them on some sheets....in that case , all 52 were in lesser supply than the remainder of the cards on that sheet....throw in the 6 checklists having 2 versions each meaning that each of the 12 checklists had a lower print run than the rest of the set...52+12 = 64 sp's....and one day , they may actually dry up.....

Interesting about those sp's you listed.

Now, it's been a long long time, but I opened cases of 88 donruss back then and can't recall ever thinking any mvp cards were short printed, especially Mattingly or mac which were very hot players.

I use to make sets and clearly recall how "limited" all the sp's were, compared to the rest of the cards.

Jerry Royster really seemed to be a pain, but I also recall Stottlemyre and Berrora being hard too.

thought he isn't listed as an sp , i always thought berroa was as well...for some reason i was also thinking either jay bell , matt williams , david wells and ron gant were sp's as well but if you believe the beckett checklist they weren't....


edit to add - just checked around and did find confirmation of a few more :

based on these additional 7 cards , i think the beckett checklist data can be updated ....

26 short-printed base (pulled from sheets and replaced by the 26 mvps).....26 short-printed bonus mvps (sp only because they were replacements for 26 other base cards and thus had a lower total print run than the non-sp base cards)....6 original version checklists (sp because only some are this version)...6 amended checklists (also sp for the same reason as the 6 original versions)....same TOTAL of 64 with the only real difference being how beckett catagorizes them....

In total, that Beckett listed 25 base cards as short printed AND every mvp card as sp too. But makes no mention of checklists.

Funny how 27 years later, there's still un certainty.

With the amount of '88 Donruss printed, not sure how they could even begin to count how many of the MVP cards were made.

I sold many of the MVP cards in sets and singles. But I did buy probably 250 cases of the stuff.

Regarding 1990 Topps Traded: The pack issued cards are on the same stock as the regular set, and are often referred to as "gray back". The box-set cards are on the traditional Traded stock and are referred to as "white back".

In 1974, Topps changed 'San Diego' to 'Washington' on the cards of 15 players as they thought the team would relocate. .

Palmeiro and Larkin first appeared on '86 sportflics cards which pre dates their '87 rookie cards.

'93 Finest is not the first finest product as the previous year topps made finest football in a very small set form with no refractors.

Much more basic and relative to the SP talk above......... It seems like many collectors think that SP just means that a card is limited in general. Most don't seem to be aware that SP refers to a card that is printed in lower quantities than other cards IN THE SAME SET. So a card #/10 is NOT SP'd if all of the other cards are also #/10.

Along those lines - Tom Glavine has a "rookie card" in the 1987 Sportflics Team Preview set as a member of the Atlanta Braves, one year prior to all his major release rookie cards....
