Well, I have to be real, I am starting to lose some interest in my cards. Well, nope, the truth is that I spend WAY too much time in my room messing with my cards, listing stuff on ebay, sorting, packing, etc, etc, etc.

I can't remember the last night that I wasn't doing one of the above, or surfing ebay looking for stuff to buy.

With that being said, I am considering thinning my collection down to about 200-250 cards. I would hold onto a couple of mid size lower end prospect stashes also.

Selling off some of this stuff is easy, some diffucult, and some might even be painful.

I am racking my brain on the best way to maximize the cash coming in, along with how to sell some of the stuff I have. I have probably 20,000 or so bowman chrome rookies, but many of the lots would be too small to make player lots out of. So how do I maximize the $$$?

I will likely make player lots of veteran/star/inserts. Potentially a couple of LARGE #d card lots, GU Lot, auto lot, etc.

I guess more than anything, i know this is going to be a massive undertaking and I am not even sure if i can even do it, let alone the 100's of hours that it will take to get it done. But i know I would be much happier having a smaller collection, and an inflated bank account.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Would people buy a "lot" of say 1,000 New York Yankees Bowman/Chrome Rookies? Something like that?

Any help/thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Re: Thinking about Truly Thinning down my collection - Thoughts?

I've had similar thoughts/problems so I am curious to see your responses

For me I don't like shipping lots that are too big to just drop into the mailbox (13oz)

My post office is totally ghetto in Brooklyn so I avoid it like the plague

I’d break it up as follows

Auto Lot- by sport
GU Lot- by sport
*try to have the lots of each sport end @ the same time to get more bids

Bowman Chrome/Bowman Lots- by year
Ref Lots
Xfrac lots
Blue Ref lots
*try to have these end @ the same time to get more bids

#d/insert lot- 1 big lot or break down by sport depending on how many cards you have

You could also combo some of these- ex. Ref/x/blue lot, but I find breaking them up separately usually yields more $$$...same w/bowman chrome/bowman lots by year. Be sure to put the card #s in the description to avoid a TON of questions (usually right before the auction ends) b/c ref lots etc. draw set builders who want to know what #s are in there

For prospects, decide what’s worth selling now. It’s not an ideal market + some guys may not fetch as much as you think. Consider listing them in your store first + hoping people bite. If they don’t sell fast + you really need the $, let them run @ auction. If it’s a prospect you’re into cheaply/think will rise by ST, I’d hold it for now (or list in store @ a BIN you’d be happy w/).

It’s a pain + time consuming, but you may be surprised by what some of it fetches. Plus, clearing out space is nice. Bigger bank account’s even nicer.

If you're selling lots, waiting until ST might benefit you a bit. Unless people are watching MLB Network, there is no focus on baseball right now.

Thank you for all of the tips as always!

I saw this one coming a mile away Skrip. LOL. Player lots you can list anytime really no big difference there. RC stuff, well you know what to do there. Common autos/gu dont fetch much these days. Non common stuff will move in big lots and is the easiest route for you. Shoot me over a list of autos/gu. I am always buying lots.

You are thinking what a ton of us are thinking. Its a fine line my friend.

Might be worth a thought.

Positives:

1.) You get charged 15% which is not so terrible considering what E-bay charges, time spent listing, watching and shipping your auctions.

2.) Lots of major dealers or card shops use major auction houses for inventory.

3.) You get rid of a bunch of stuff your don't want in one shot.

4.) The auction house does all of the research, writing, packing, insurance and all of the buyer's are registered and legit.

Negatives:

1.) You have the potential of not maximizing all of your money. Most auction houses are on a deadline and can't spend hours upon hours upon hours in deciphering who the next great prospect it. So pretty much all of your base Chrome rookies would be lumped in one lot.

2.) Hall of Fame game-used/auto tends to sell better than prospects.

3.) This may not be a negative, but most auctions will break up your into lots which will get a minimum of $1000.

For the record, I work for a major auction house and I consign.

James
