This is why the AS voting is stupid

I may be a Yankees fan, but I'm also a realistic Yankees fan. How can this be:

SHORTSTOP
Derek Jeter, Yankees: 2,654,040
Asdrubal Cabrera, Indians: 2,242,157
Elvis Andrus, Rangers: 1,513,929
Jhonny Peralta, Tigers: 875,371
Marco Scutaro, Red Sox: 813,888

IMO - Cabrera should be #1

The sad thing is that HOF induction is at least partly correlated to All-Star appearances.

(I am not saying that Jeter doesn't deserve HOF induction, but you can see an issue here)

The All Star starting lineups are 100% a popularity contest. This is completely okay because the ASG was invented for the fans anyway.

But then Bud Selig added the World Series home-field advantage stipulation to the ASG's outcome and created a problem. Now the game actually means something, so shouldn't the best players in each league be the starters to make sure each team has the best possible chance to win?

Making the ASG the deciding factor of which team will get home-field advantage is one of the dumbest ideas in recent sports history, IMO.

The all star game is for the fans, that's why they get to pick the starting line-ups, its so they get to see who they want to see in the game regardless if they deserve it or not. Its always been this way, ever since fan voting came into effect for the all-star games, which was a really long time ago, its like this in Hockey and basketball as well.

I really, really don't think the AS game should determine WS home field advantage though. Home Field advantage should be given to the team that had the best regular season record.

I hate to say it, but it is why Cal Ripken was an All-Star 19 times. He probably deserved to go like 12 times.

Derek Jeter can be compared to Cal Ripken in terms of AS appearances. He's a legend, whether you like him or not. Most likely Derek Jeter will be an all-star the rest of his career, especially the last year he plays. They will make him an "honorary all-star" a la Ripken/Gwynn their last year.

I say just chill out. Most years, the last week of voting has the massive vote totals, and "mistakes" get corrected.

I'm a huge Sox fan, and I even gagged a little bit when I saw Scutaro on that list.

I put in 75 votes for Cabrera.

Couldnt agree more...

I knew it was stupid when Fukodome made it as a rookie a couple years ago and barely was good enough to stay in the Majors.
