Ok, so I got to thinking about this over the weekend and thought it would be fun to see how other player collectors in the community felt.

I was going through all my Mark Reynolds cards to make a decent list in excel to make it easier to figure out what non 1/1 cards I don't have examples of in any way shape or form when I thought to myself, "i'm crazy". I've probably spent upwards of $3000 on Mark Reynolds cards and memorabilia to date (quite a bit of money for me). This led to me projecting that in 10 years my assortment of this NON-potential HOFer (never even on the All Star team) is doomed for being almost valueless.

It doesn't bother me because I love collecting and as far as player collecting the reason I started collecting reynolds was because he played for my favorite team and was affordable (in no way did I want to "profit" from my collection). I started collecting reynolds because I didn't want to worry about what the value of the cards would be; much like I had done for all previous cards I collected. I just wanted someone to chase that would be in most new products and continue to be affordable while continuing being relevant to some extent (i, like chicks, also dig the long ball).

I'm just being realistic in thinking that a guy like reynolds WILL eventually be cut and replaced by someone with a better .BA, less Ks, and similar power in the near future. Now this doesn't take into account the possibility that he works hard and improves, but it hasn't happened in the last 2 years now. If and when this does happen, what happens to the value of guys like this? Will me and maybe the 2 or 3 other Reynolds collectors be the only ones buying?

I'm also trying to find a comparison that matches the traits of my PC player and haven't ran across one yet:
0 or 1-2 time all star...
Hasn't been a part of a WS winning team...
Not really a "face of the franchise"...
Hits for power (projecting career HRs in 250-300 range)...
Lower tier .BA...

So far I've kinda found Ryan Klesco to match the projections of I have of my PC player although he was a part of some of those great braves WS teams...

Anyone else have a current player they collect that they've wondered the same about. If so, have you found a historical comparison based on who you think your players career will mimic.

I may be the only fool who thinks of stuff like this so if this thread falls to obscurity (much like I believe my PC will) its no biggie, lol...

I must say I have to applaud you for sticking with the player you like, and not care or worry about future value. That's what collecting should be all about. I collect a few guys that won't be hall of famers (Dan Majerle/Jaret Wright) but that doesn't stop me from collecting their cards.

Maybe once Reynolds retires or hangs up his cleats, you can sell your collection off to the Rob Deer or Dave Kingman collectors? 8-) How's that for a couple of comparisons?

WooooHoooooo Dan Majerle! I have a small PC of him as well. He's a big time fan favorite though and has very little to buy. Panini has been saturating the market with his stuff lately so maybe I can start to pick up more majerle.

Rob Deer is a pretty good comparison as well...

But to be fair, if you spent this much on one non-HOF/non-"big star" player, chances are you'd at least have cards set collectors would value greatly. It helps to look at both sets and players when determining value and worth!

Among the names on Baseball Reference's list of similar players through this stage of Reynolds career:

Dean Palmer
Ron Gant
Matt Williams
Pat Burrell
Cory Snyder
Edwin Encarnacion
Pete Incaviglia

All of those, I think, are fair comparisons (though Williams, Burrell and probably Gant have World Series rings which was one of your criteria)

However, #1 on the list, probably due in large part to his sub-.200 batting average in his first full year, is actually Mike Schmidt, so you never know what might happen.

The value of the collection is based upon the person who owns/wants it. If you love it, its invaluable. Not everything in this hobby is about money.

That is what the point of my post was...

My reynolds collection has nothing to do with increasing or sustaining value...

im guessing ure point is that is reynolds worthy enough to keep spending on

Kinda, I'm gonna keep collecting him. I just was thinking into the future maybe when my kids look at my most impressive collection and ask who the hell is that guy??? lol...

Then explaining that daddy loved watching a guy who batted around the mendoza line and set the MLB stirkout record and then broke it the next season is why he bought those and that's why community college is in their future... lol...

This is a misconception among family/friends and a probably board members about my Perk stash... He will never become anything, and he is not an investment. It is a collection for a player that I like.

I completely understand! Hell I collect Austin Kearns. I mean he sucks. Bad. But I really don't care and I do enjoy collecting him, even now. I still ckech ebay every for stuff I don't have and I pickup stuff pretty frequently. I don't want to think about how much I've spent on my collection but I've had fun putting it all together and that's all that matters.

In regards to my Cruz collection, I'm actually glad he never reached HOF status. It makes it easier to afford almost anything of his. On the flip side, I wish his career was just a little better because now I run into the problem of people not listing or digging his stuff up because it won't go for that much.
