Why not make your auctions have a starting price equal to your shipping costs and offer free shipping?

If you don't like someones shipping price, don't buy from them.
Yes. it's that easy.

If a gas station is too expensive do you shop there or find another?
Do you look to somehow screw them?

If the person gives the shipping price and says how they ship and then ships that way, he/she has done nothing wrong.
The buyer agreed to it, when he/she bought the item, to complain at that point is moronic.

Is the type of shipping the seller uses wrong and costly for what he is selling??? yes
Does it matter, if you hit accept and agree to it?? No
If he sends in the manner he describes and $$ price matches cost, should you ding him?? hell no

Do I sell? yes
2 years ago I spent 115k on ebay, so I think that also makes me a buyer.
More buyer than most, by a large margin.
I probably have 10 times more problems with buyers than I do with sellers.
It's not even close.
In 17 years on ebay, I have had a few buying problems.
In the same time, I have problems with bad buyers weekly.

Weekly, I have to talk buyers down, becasue USPS didn't scan an item. Item shows up next day, one final scan.
I have had so many buyers lie about their intent for the item they are buying, just to get me to drop price.
When selling at high volume, 5-6 non payers a week. Some say this isnt a big problem.
The hell it isn't. When it's a brand new/hot product a card and get 150 the first few days and
then sell for 80 after being relisted, just because a moron doesnt't pay. Losing $70 is a big deal.
I won't list the scams.

What I have learned to do as a buyer, is stick the the good sellers. If a seller has an attitude or does something
you don't like, don't use him any more. It's that simple. If his charge for shipping is too high, don't use him.

But, I would never buy something just cause I need it and then ding his ratings and f up his paypal acct.
That's just childish.

I'll ask a practical question, I do free shipping as a rule, I figure out what I want for the item add my shipping costs and I have my price. The question I have is if I have an item for $10 delivered and someone else has it for $6 plus $5 shipping and that shipping is to the penny of the sellers cost. Will you purchase the $6 because the seller is charging exact shipping and thus is selling his item cheaper than I am?
Maybe it's just me, but if a seller charges me $10 to ship their item I expect the total fees associated with the shipment to be in that ballpark.
You - $10 dlvd
Other - $11 dlvd
Enlighten me how $11 is ever cheaper than $10

FWIW, the item was received well protected and 5 stars were already left across the board, but carry on, the whole point of this thread was just to gauge peoples opinions, not tell me what to do because I had my mind made up before its creation.

I've been using eBay since 1998 and have left feedback for every transaction I've had. That said I have never rated any seller with the star system ever because to me it's a colossal waste of time with the amount of transactions I do plus it's a petty way for eBay to police sellers. Sellers have no control of what happens to their items once they are in the hands of whatever service ships them, yet many on here have complained about getting dinged because of it. It's stupid and it's wrong.

I was giving you my opinion, not telling you what to do. Sounds like you did the right thing.

Because they're only charging $6 for their item along with reasonable shipping. If someone is willing to ding a seller for shipping costs they would also have to agree that the $6 price is cheaper than the $10 price because shipping cannot be considered as a part of a whole.

I have asked buyers to allow a different method. In this case, maybe he may have agreed to a bubble mailer, had you asked? Other than not wanting to invest in shipping supplies, using flat rate boxes for everything seems unreasonable. It's not necessary.

I don't think a seller has much to complain about if his shipping cost score suffers if the only option he offers is an unnecessary and somewhat expensive option when it is clearly not beneficial in anyway to anyone buy himself.

The goal of a seller should be to grow customer your base through satisfaction and keep them happy (and spending), not alienate them with rigid policies and inflexibility.
Yeah but some buyers aren't worth the time and hassle. Let someone else have the cardcops of the world for customers.

Yea, I understand, just wanted to make it clear this thread was not for me to determine a course of action ;)

Prior to creation, I already determined if it arrived as he stated in a flat-rate then there was absolutely no reason to ding him. I probably should of created a mock example rather than personal example to illustrate my question to the board.

If a buyer isnt taking shipping into their final price, they are not a smart bidder
Its no different then bidding on auction house auctions, you better take the buyer premium into consideration
Back to the shipping issue though, ebay clearly asks, how reasonable were the shipping and handling charges?
I bid, I win item, I pay. If shipping was charged at $5 and it comes in a bubble mailer that I know cost roughly $1.50 to ship, I ask myself the question ebay asked me to answer, "How reasonable were the charges" in relation to the service I received? A seller making $3.50 deserves a DSR ding for charging 3+x the actual rate. Yes I agreed to pay that, but the cost that came out of the sellers pocket isnt even close to the actual cost, therefore I would gladly ding their DSR for that question. If you cant see the rationalization behind that, I cant help you.
