See what you think of this one.

Reds get - James Shields and BJ Upton

Rays get - Yonder Alonso, Devin Mesoraco, Todd Frazier and Yorman Rodriguez

Who would hang up the phone first, if at all?

(This is just a hypothetical, there's no truth to it.)

Rays need more in return. IMO

Edit-after looking closer, I agree with poster below because Upton is just a more expensive version of Drew Stubbs

If I'm the rays I take that deal and run with it, Not sold on a half of season with shields and I'm not a BJ Upton fan. Alonso and Mesoraco is a real nice haul and fraizer should be solid as well.

As a Reds fan, I would not be happy with that trade at all. That is way too much. There is no way I include both Mesoraco and Alonso in any deal. Mesoraco is the Reds future starting catcher. Plus, I don't want BJ Upton.

A lot of talent going both ways, but also a lot of question marks all around. It's an intriguing one. I look at it once and think the Rays are getting hosed because Shields has been very good. Then I think it's the type of deal the Rays would make to loosen up the payroll.

Wow, I'd wonder what the Reds GM was drinking if he gave up that much for Shields and Upton. I think Alonso's going to be a very good pro and Mesoraco is going to be an above avg offensive catcher with decent defense. Add Frazier and Yorman i think its a steal for Tampa for a guy who is pitching above his head right now and a more expesive Drew Stubbs.

To expand on that:

2011 numbers

Stubbs: wOBA.330 wRC+105 OPS .720

Upton: wOBA .324 wRC+106 OPS .722

Upton is a bit better defensively with a UZR of -1.7 compared to -3.2 for Stubbs.

Think the reds would be on the way bottom of that trade if it were to go through. Shields is a consistent starter, but Upton isn't anything special offensively, and has attitude problems to boot.

Plus they'd be giving up way too much. Again the prospects and young guys are not mlb proven, but have much more upside in value then Upton probably ever will. Atleast with how he's been for the last 5 or 6 years. Consistently mediocre, which is less then you'd want to give those guys up for.

Upton has obviously never put it all together however if you look at his last month he's actually been excellent.

Hitting for average hitting for power stealing bases and playing great defense.

32nd best player in all of baseball according to my yahoo fantasy league ( over the last 30 days). 66th best player in baseball for the entire season.

My opinion-there is a 1% chance the Rays do that deal.

When you look at Shields being very affordable for 3 more seasons, and Upton still being young with all kinds of potential-they could definitely get more in return than those 4. If you look at it, Mesoraco and Alonso are good to great prospects-Frazier is no sure thing, and Yorman Rodriguez has a lot of potential, but isn't a "top" prospect in my opinion at the moment.

I guess the best way to put it is this: if they traded Shields and Upton separately, they would easily get a better return in my opinion. People want to point to Shields having a great year at the right time, but he is darn affordable for 3 more years, and is a #2/#3 starter depending on the team. Add to that the fact that the Rays don't "have" to trade him-and I just can't imagine them trading him unless they get a great haul in return.

I think if im the Rays I would do it in a heartbeat. They could then bring up Desmond Jennings to fill Upton's spot and save a ton of cash and they have Matt Moore who could be a late call up or in the rotation by sometime next year. They also have Chris Archer in the farm system. The Rays would then clear up a ton of cash and maybe they pick up a nice free agent when the season ends or get a nice trade done.
