Tickets Still Available in Arizona

If the Arizona Cardinals can sell out their regular season games, this really tells you about the state of baseball in this country in general.

Last night's MNF game got an 8 rating for a meaningless game involving a crap team without it's superstar quarterback.

The Yankee/Tiger playoff game between the two Aces of the AL got a 4.7 rating going head to head with the MNF game.

Flame away.

This could be for many reasons, people like watcing the Colts without Manning. No one likes to see Jeter strike out. People are more excited that football is actually happening....I could go on.

I know this is a baseball message board, but, how about, very few people actually care about baseball anymore? The truth hurts.

You might be right, but it doesn't hurt. I for one care (about my team), so when they are out of it I care less about what is going on. I didn't watch the Yankees or MNF. I was scanning some PC items, then I went off to play COD Modern Warfare. Then went to bed.

This was nothing personal against you. It was the same way in Atlanta (as alluded to above), when they were in the playoffs every year and no one went to the games unless it was the WS. In the meantime, UGA football was selling out every game. No one went to Hawks games either, though.

So why do Dodger fans get to the stadium in the fourth inning and leave by the seventh?

I understand it weasn't personal and I didn't take it like that, I was just giving a personal example if that makes sense.

As far as arriving late and leaving early...Don't you think they want a break from traffic at some point in their lives? Why not on game night? LOL

The NFL MNF game gets rating because of gambling. People chase their losses or feel great about their winnings on Sunday and therefore bet again on MNF and tune in since its the only thing going on. There is very little MLB can do about that since, for the most part, teams have a very regional audience, and you are unlikely to get the casual fan to tune into a division series non clinching game, even with Sabathia and Verlander on the mound

There are under 300 seats left for the game tonight, and on the D'Backs site the cheapest I'm seeing is $16 per. With a capacity of over 48,600....that isn't too bad.

As a comp, both Milwaukee and San Fran have under a 42k capacity.

To make it worse, Chase field is easy to get to, and is a GREAT place to watch a game. ITs one of the best ballparks I have been to

I read yesterday that Tampa had crowds of more than 30k just twice this year. I know the problems: horrible stadium, far removed from metro area etc. But that city/area doesn't deserve that team.

Geez... the Twins finished last and got a crowd of over 3 million. Probably the new stadium though.

The experts give a three year honeymoon for a new stadium. So expect to get huge crowds next year, but in 2013, we'll see. By then, we'll have an All-Star Game to look forward to, so that may give the Twins an extra year to fill the seats. After that, the team better perform, or it'll be the mostly empty Metrodome all over again.

Maybe it has to do with Arizona still being a young franchise? Middle aged people didn't grow up with them so they aren't too attached; they probably rooted for them when they won the WS but don't lose sleep over the Dbacks when they loase. The younger crowd may have been too young when they won the WS or could care less now that they've been bad the last few years; young people usually jump from team to team pretty often.

Im not going to contribute to a team that doesnt care about being anything other than mediocre.

USA Today is right, we are worst team in baseball to make the playoffs this year.

The fact that we even made the playoffs this year is a shock, but after you see how weak the NL West is, it's really no surprise.

I'm not sure what more do you want. How many games do they have to win to not be "mediocre?" 100? 110?

They won 94 games!

They are a mediocre team who won over 90 games.

They made no real attempt to sign a good player or even be in the running for one.

Just because they got lucky this season doesnt mean anything and it's showing right now

Don't they have a solid farm system? All they need are great young players.

I remember hearing on one of the Indians radio broadcasts they mentioned that basically every game at home sold out or close to it because of the new stadium before the season even started but the actual attendance was nowhere near what they announced.

I figured 2 would be the max, but 3 makes sense. I doubt an All-Star game would pull in crowds all season long unless the team is strong.

I gotta get tickets for it when it gets here though...

This is the biggest issue, based on my experience at least. Even more than being a young team is the demographics here. The number of transplants here in AZ is ridiculous, and most of them already have allegiances and ties to other teams. To be honest, I rarely come across middle aged folks who were born in AZ- it's a rarity right now. Most of my friends (college aged), are the first generation to grow up here, and even if they aren't fanatical like me, support the Diamondbacks to some extent. But even then half of my friends, including myself, were not born here and already were fans of some other team. And while I've watched and supported this team for the past, whatever its been, 14 years I think, many of my friends were still only 9 or 10 when AZ won the WS, and I don't think had as much interest in them at the time. I know I did, but I can't say the same for most people that age.

I've always thought it was going to take a generation or two for the Diamondbacks to develop a solid fan base. With AZ being more attractive to people in the last decade or two, I've always felt it wasn't going to be until my children started growing up and being able to afford tickets that the team would have a solid foundation.

It's not an assumption when prices were 5X + for last year's playoffs. If you'd looked at Stubhub during that time, people were paying through the nose for tickets. Demand was more than high enough to fill an extra 6k seats.
